Everyday policy-makers seeking to create well-informed, data-driven decisions turn to GIS and geography professionals in roles like urban planners, policy analysts, and GIS analysts. Unfortunately, Black people are under-represented in GIS. This reality leaves policy-makers and GIS teams with an extreme deficit in Black perspectives. Moreover, GIS education and practices rarely lead with or center racial justice. This results in policies informed by data analysis and visualizations that are blind to the realities and impacts of racism and other intersecting systems of oppression. Not to mention that GIS is a varied and fruitful field that could offer many Black individuals, families, and communities opportunities to prosper in many ways. Therefore, we seek communities of GIS and geography partitioners that equitably reflect the Black diaspora at all levels and in all areas. Furthermore, we seek GIS and geography communities of practice that leads with racial justice as a fundamental requirement and motivator. As with Goal 10 - Reduced Inequalities, we empower and promote the social and economic inclusion of Black people in GIS, geography, and STEM irrespective of age, sex, disability, origin, religion, socioeconomic background, or any other status. We also want to create GIS practices that help to ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies, and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies, and action in this regard. Furthermore, as with Goal 5 - Gender Equality, 5.1 we seek to end all forms of discrimination against all Black women and nonbinary people in the GIS community.
