Mission: Promote literacy and motivate children to read by providing new books to create home libraries for under served children in Southern California. Our books often introduce reading for fun to the home. Low literacy limits individual's employment opportunities and options open to them in life. We must begin with children to shift this dynamic. The National Endowment for the Arts' recent report, "To Read or Not to Read" highlights two key tenets of the RIF program: 1) The number of books in the home is a significant predictor of academic achievement; 2) Reading for pleasure correlates strongly with academic achievement. And remarkably, several studies have shown that approximately 60% of kindergartners in low-income families do not have a single age-appropriate book in their home.
