Coral Restoration in Maunalua Bay

Half of the world’s coral reefs have been lost over the last 30 years, and its been estimated that by 2050, only 10% of the world’s reefs will persist. Coral reefs are threatened by a combination of factors, the most serious being global climate change. Human-induced climate change leaves coral reefs exposed to warmer waters. When temperatures are too warm, corals become stressed and release their symbiotic algae, leaving the transparent living coral tissue over the white skeleton, appearing "bleached”. Coral bleaching has become more severe, frequent, and widespread, leading to high mortality on reefs across the globe.

Restore with Resilience is a collaborative and community driven effort that is taking a unique approach to coral restoration. By using local, thermally resistant coral stocks, Restore with Resilience hopes to enhance future reef resilience, leading to the protection of our coastlines and conservation of these dynamic ecosystems. This project is the first of its kind in Hawaiʻi and is leading the way for future coral restoration across the state.
