Over 15 years ago our son, Jax, was born with a congenital heart disease. We learned along the way that I have a gene mutation that gave my son hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, putting him at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. Jax's sisters have been followed by cardiology because of this and we found that our youngest, Allie, has a silent patent ductus arteriosus and a patent foramen ovale - put simply holes in her heart.

This past December, Jax had surgery to get an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) - a lifesaving device that monitors and corrects dangerous heart rhythms by delivering electric shocks when necessary because he is now at a 25% chance his heart will stop in the next five years.
