Celebrating the Life of Eugene "Gene" Barnes, Jr

We invite you to join us in honoring the remarkable life of Eugene "Gene" W. Barnes Jr., a loving husband, father, grandfather, and veteran who touched the lives of all who knew him. Our "Celebrating the Life of Eugene 'Gene' Barnes, Jr" fundraiser aims to pay tribute to Gene's legacy and continue his passionate support for community development through contributions to the YMCA of Central Maryland.

The YMCA of Central Maryland stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment, dedicated to nurturing the potential of every individual. As part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, they operate under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Your support will help the Y continue its mission to build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

Born on July 11th, 1937, in Baltimore, Gene Barnes embraced a life filled with love, adventure, and service. The YMCA in Baltimore holds a special place in his heart, as it was there he discovered and nurtured his love of swimming. Gene was indeed "a fish in water," with swimming being one of his fondest memories.

In 1955, Gene joined the United States Air Force, where he served with honor and dedication. His journey through life included traveling the world and three enriching years in Germany before settling in Colorado in 1970. Throughout his life, he found joy in hobbies such as cheering for the Denver Broncos, fishing, road trips in his beloved "Big Foot," and enjoying action movies and bowling.

Gene shared a deep and timeless love with his wife Patricia Jones Barnes, whom he married in 1959. Their union was blessed with three children and four cherished grandchildren who will always hold his memory in their hearts. Gene passed away on December 7th, 2025, joining Patricia who had passed on June 10th, 2024.

To celebrate Gene's life, a church service with a heartfelt eulogy will be held, followed by a military honors ceremony and internment at Fort Logan, where he will be eternally commemorated in a columbarium. As we come together to remember Gene's vibrant life, your donations to the YMCA of Central Maryland will ensure that his legacy of giving and community support continues to thrive.

We thank you for honoring Gene Barnes’ remarkable life and legacy with your generous contributions.
