Day Laborer Outreach

It's a Labor of Love

Border Angels originally began by providing aid to laborers living in Northern San Diego County. Since then, we have expanded to conduct humanitarian work along the San Diego/ Tijuana Border region.

The term “day laborer” applies to individuals searching for construction and landscaping project-based work.
Many of these day laborers are undocumented and homeless. We often see them outside of stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s. Waiting to see if they are one of the lucky few to be hired for the day. Many day laborers are undocumented and/or homeless, and are often subject to discrimination.

We typically see men aged 20 - 60 at these sites. Many of these men are fathers, brothers, and sons here to provide for their families back home.
We see laborers from Mexico, Central/ South America, and Haiti. Language barriers do not prevent us from helping those from other countries; we have translated our resources into multiple languages to continue educating and assisting workers on their rights.

At least once a month, we visit three sites where day laborers congregate and we provide them with food, hygiene products, and work gear.
Many day laborers are also undocumented, and legal help can prevent deportation, help with their legal status, or provide them with employee rights and violation information. This program is also intended to document and collect information on any instances of threats of deportation, racial discrimination, etc.
