The African American Diabetes Association (AADA) is a national nonprofit on a mission to fight diabetes in Black communities. We're a 501c3 organization, meaning your generous donations to us are tax-deductible.
Why We're NeededBlack Americans face a disproportionate burden from diabetes. Alarmingly, 13.4% of Black men and 12.7% of Black women have been diagnosed with diabetes, a rate 60% higher than that of white Americans (according to the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health). This disparity is even worse in underserved communities, where access to healthy food and quality healthcare is often limited.
Meet Jada:
Jada, a 45-year-old mother of four, lives in an underserved community where the nearest grocery store with fresh produce is miles away. Diagnosed with diabetes five years ago, Jada struggled to manage her condition without proper resources. She began experiencing severe neuropathy, causing pain and numbness in her feet, making it difficult for her to care for her children and work. Through AADA's intervention, Jada connected with a culturally competent healthcare provider and attended our nutritional workshops. Today, her condition is under control, and she actively participates in community outreach to help others like her.
Meet Neil:
Neil, a 60-year-old retiree, lost his toes due to an untreated diabetic ulcer. Living on a fixed income, he had limited access to quality healthcare and was unaware of the severity of his condition. After attending one of AADA's educational seminars, he realized the importance of regular check-ups and proper diabetes management. With our support, Neil now receives regular care and serves as a mentor for newly diagnosed patients, emphasizing the importance of early intervention.
