The Familias Reunidas Bond Program was established in December 2019 in response to the anti-immigrant agenda that the current administration continues to uphold, which results in the incarceration of immigrants and asylum seekers in ICE detention centers.
In addition to reuniting families and freeing migrants detained in ICE facilities, this program aims to raise awareness about the unjust realities faced by immigrants and asylum seekers while in detention. It also highlights the complex and costly process of paying an immigration bond. Most individuals detained qualify for release on bond (similar to bail in the criminal justice system) but remain in custody because they cannot afford the high bond amounts set by immigration judges. Through this program, we provide up to $5,000 in bond assistance for individuals detained in ICE detention centers in California who have no criminal record.
As of November 2024, our fund has helped over 140 immigrants and asylum seekers in the Otay Mesa, Adelanto, Golden State Correctional Facility and Imperial Regional detention centers. This program has allowed detainees to be released and continue their immigration process outside of detention rather than being incarcerated and mistreated. We remain committed to raising awareness of the complex immigration system that disproportionately impacts migrants and supporting those in ICE detention who cannot afford the bond to regain their freedom.
