Melanated and Mapping: Black Geographers & GISers

Connecting Black students and professionals with opportunities in GIS

Black Representation in Geography Matters

  • Our Voices in the Discussion: Black representation in geography and GIS (geographic information systems) in roles like policy analyst, urban planner, and geography professional helps ensure our perspectives are at the table informing health, education, and economic policies.
  • Black Equity in Tech: Black representation in geography and GIS in roles like developer, data scientist, and tech creator means more economic opportunity for individuals, families, and communities
  • Innovation: Black representation in geography and GIS in general means more innovative ideas and solutions for everyone!

Unfortunately,...

Black students and professionals are often underrepresented and undervalued in geography and GIS, which can make it hard for them to get the education and skills they need to succeed. GIS informs public policy and powers many of your favorite apps.

NorthStar of GIS is committed to changing this. Today, we provide cash grants to HBCU students pursuing geography coursework, and you can help us do more! Beginning next year, we want to provide travel grants, education grants, and conference grants to Black GIS students and professionals so that they can attend important GIS conferences.

With your help, we can provide even more Black students and professionals with the opportunity to attend these conferences and pursue their dreams in geography and geospatial education.
