Building the Future — One Block at a Time
In 2026, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a national milestone known as the America250 celebration.
Across the country, communities are being invited to reflect on the ideals that shaped the nation — unity, participation, and the responsibility of each generation to build the future.
Hands Across America in Minecraft invites students to participate in that national reflection through creativity, collaboration, and civic engagement.
Connecting Past and FutureForty years ago, millions of Americans joined hands during the historic event Hands Across America, forming a human chain across the country to demonstrate unity and compassion.
Today’s students have an opportunity to recreate that spirit in a way that reflects their generation and their digital world.
Instead of joining hands across highways, students will connect through Minecraft, building a digital chain of classrooms across the United States.
This initiative connects two historic moments:
• 1986 – Hands Across America
• 2026 – America250
Both moments celebrate the power of Americans coming together around shared ideals.
Civic Engagement Through CreativityHands Across Minecraft introduces civic engagement in a way that resonates with students.
Rather than simply studying history, students participate in a project that asks them to reflect on questions such as:
• What does community mean?
• What kind of future do we want to build?
• How can individuals contribute to something larger than themselves?
Students express these ideas through the design of their Minecraft characters, representing themselves and their communities.
Each character becomes part of a growing national build.
A National Student CollaborationAs classrooms across the country participate, their characters connect into a digital chain representing students across America.
This collaborative build demonstrates an important civic principle:
Democracy is built through participation.
Each student contributes a single block.
Together, those blocks create something far greater.
The America250 Student Moment - May 26 National LivestreamOn May 26 — the 40th anniversary of Hands Across America — classrooms across the country will watch a national livestream revealing the student build.
During the broadcast:
• Student characters appear on a national map
• Classrooms from across the country join the chain
• Schools illuminate the map with glowing beacons
As the camera pulls back, viewers see a powerful visual:
A nation of students connected across the United States.
Why Civic Engagement MattersAmerica250 provides an opportunity to engage young people in the meaning of citizenship and the responsibility of shaping the future.
Hands Across America in Minecraft helps students understand that civic participation is not limited to government or politics.
It includes:
• creativity
• collaboration
• community involvement
• working together toward shared goals
These experiences help students see themselves as active participants in the story of the nation.
A Generation Building the FutureThe United States was built by generations of individuals who believed they could shape the future of their communities and their country.
Hands Across America in Minecraft invites today’s students to take part in that same tradition.
Each character represents a student voice.
Each block represents a contribution.
Together, students across America will show that the future of the nation is something we build together — one block at a time.
