Meet Jewel — Learning There Is Another Way
Jewel came into our lives through a simple post. She had never truly been meant to stay where she was, passed along in a situation that didn’t fit. When the call came, we made the long trip to bring her home, knowing very little—only that she needed somewhere to belong.
At first, she seemed sweet and searching for connection, but it didn’t take long to see she was anxious, lacking confidence, and unsure how to feel safe. After even injuring herself early on, her journey became one of patience, healing, and starting over.
With time, and the help of dedicated students, Jewel has slowly begun to trust, learning she is safe and that there is another way.

Jewel’s Journey
At Melody’s Haven of Hope, some horses come to us with clear stories…and others arrive with pieces missing, leaving us to gently uncover who they are.
Jewel’s story began with a post. Someone had taken her in as part of a deal—never truly intending for her to stay. Maybe she was meant for a daughter… maybe just temporary… but one thing became clear: Jewel needed a home of her own.We saw her sweet face and reached out. At first it was “yes”… then “no”… then “yes” again. And when the call finally came, my niece jumped in the truck with me, and we made the 10-hour round trip to bring her home. We didn’t know much—only that she wouldn’t even load into a trailer. Eventually, she did… and we headed home wondering: What did I just say yes to?
The Truth Beneath the Sweetness
At first, Jewel seemed exactly what we hoped—gentle, sweet, and wanting connection. But it didn’t take long before we saw the truth. Jewel was full of anxiety. She lacked confidence. And she didn’t yet know how to feel safe. In her fear, she even hurt herself—thankfully a pulled ligament—but it meant months of stall rest and careful recovery. When she healed physically, we realized something deeper: She was not the horse we thought we had brought home. And she needed more than we had anticipated.
The Turning Point
Jewel struggled and was set aside for a time—not because she didn’t matter, but because she needed more than most could give. Then a student fell in love with her. She gave up her own lesson time just so we could work with Jewel. She stood and watched, learning, waiting… and when the time was right, she stepped in. Together, they began to build trust. Slowly… Jewel started to change. She began to understand that she wouldn’t be mistreated. That she could trust. That there was another way.
Starting Again — Stronger Each Time
When life shifted and that student needed to step away, Jewel found herself waiting again. But not for long. Another teen connected deeply with her and stepped in to continue her journey. Now, we are once again moving forward—helping Jewel build confidence, connection, and a new understanding of the world around her.
A Past That Still Speaks
Through pieces of her history, we learned she had been pushed too far, too fast—put into situations she wasn’t ready for. Even thrown in with cattle despite being afraid… leading to panic, injury, and fear that stayed with her. Those experiences shaped her. And they are why we do things differently.
Who Jewel Is Becoming
Today, Jewel is learning: How to trust humans…How to build connection instead of fear…How to express herself in positive ways…How to stand in confidence instead of anxiety She has so much potential…but more importantly, she deserves the time it takes to get there
Jewel’s Ongoing Care
