Meet Solid — A Beautiful Soul Who Deserved More Than Being “Useful”

Solid’s journey is one of quiet resilience and a reminder of how quickly a horse’s value can be reduced to usefulness. Once a show horse and later a broodmare, she came to us in critical condition—unmanaged, in pain, and ultimately diagnosed with both Cushing’s disease and insulin resistance. After an emergency fight to save her life, months of intensive care, and ongoing management, Solid has stabilized, but her needs remain significant. She requires daily medication, specialized low-sugar nutrition, consistent farrier care, and now deeper diagnostic support through a horse hair analysis and chelation to address lingering imbalances. Despite everything she has endured, Solid remains incredibly sweet and deserving—a horse who simply needs continued support to stay comfortable, healthy, and finally live the life she was always meant to have.

Solid’s Journey

Solid is a 20-year-old Arabian mare whose life began in the show world. She was valued for her beauty and breeding until an accident left a scar on her face and suddenly she was no longer considered “pretty” enough. After that, she became a broodmare—another chapter that too often happens to well-bred mares when they are no longer useful in the show ring. She is so well bred that one of her foals even ended up in the Middle East.

When She Arrived

When her breeder contacted me and said they had a horse who would be a wonderful addition to our program, we trusted that things would be okay. I knew them, and I had even seen photos of children riding her in a parade. But when they brought her over the mountains from Central Oregon and unloaded her from the trailer, we immediately knew something was very wrong. She had a long hair coat, a cresty neck, and looked rough and uncomfortable. They told me she was on pergolide and handed me a few pink pills, but when I later asked for more information, bloodwork, or veterinary records, I discovered there had never been proper diagnostics done.

Her Fight for Survival

We made an appointment to get answers, but before we could get there, Solid crashed. She was down, in terrible pain, and needed emergency care immediately. What followed was heartbreaking. Solid was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and insulin resistance—a difficult and expensive combination. We spent thousands of dollars trying to save her, managing pain, inflammation, special shoeing, medications, and the long road back from a crisis that could have ended very differently.

Ongoing Care and Management

With intensive care, therapeutic shoeing, medication, and a lot of love, Solid slowly began to recover. Today, her care remains ongoing and specialized. She requires low-sugar hay and grain, daily medications, and careful farrier work to keep her comfortable.

The Next Step in Healing

Because her medications are still not fully addressing all of her symptoms, we are now pursuing a horse hair analysis to look deeper into potential imbalances. This will be followed by targeted chelation support to help her body detox and rebalance—an important next step in her healing journey.

Why She Needs You

Solid’s previous owners refused to help with any of the bills, so her recovery and continued care have fallen entirely to us. But she is worth it. She is kind, deserving, and finally safe. Would you consider sponsoring Solid and helping us continue to give her the care she needs?

The Impact of Your Support

Your sponsorship helps provide the daily medication, specialized nutrition, hoof care, and advanced support Solid needs to stay comfortable and continue healing and stay alive. Most of all, it ensures she will never again be valued only for what she can produce or how she looks.

At Melody’s Haven of Hope, Solid is safe. She is loved. She is home!  Please help her to thrive!
