The garden commemorates the 18 people who lost their lives in two air raids on Wick during World War II. On July 1, 1940, a lone enemy aircraft dropped two bombs on Bank Row, believed to be the first daylight air raid of the war. Fifteen people, including eight children, died. Another raid on October 20, 1940, claimed the lives of a young woman and two children. The victims' names are listed in the garden.The group responsible for establishing the Memorial Garden, officially opened in August 2010, aimed to create a place where the community and visitors could enjoy life while remembering the fallen. Children from local schools and wedding groups often visit the garden, which is appreciated as a peaceful and beautiful spot. Past events like barbecues and Highland dancing have taken place, and the directors continue to collaborate with local groups to honour the victims and keep the garden thriving for all to enjoy.
