SPCA Westchester is a no-kill, 501(c)3 not-for-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to saving homeless, abused and abandoned animals and to protecting animals from cruelty and neglect through education and enforcement of humane laws. OUR HISTORY: SPCA Westchester is one of the oldest humane societies in the United States. We were founded in 1883 by Ossining resident Mary Dusenberry after she observed horses being abused as they delivered heavy loads of coal. Together with caring friends, Mrs. Dusenberry obtained land on which to build the Society’s first home and established a fund to be used to prevent cruelty to animals. The SPCA is still located on the same property, making it one of the oldest landholders in Briarcliff Manor. Originally affiliated with the ASPCA, the SPCA became an independent organization in the 1920’s and does NOT receive funding from the ASPCA or any national animal welfare organizations.

Plenty of Pit Bulls works to save the lives and improve the quality of life of dogs in Alachua County, Florida, and surrounding areas. We do so by rescuing dogs at risk of euthanasia at shelters in north central Florida. We are also a rescue partner for the ASPCA and in that capacity we take in dogs from national cruelty cases. Our organizational mission focuses on dogs who are labeled “pit bulls,” a broad category that encompasses a large proportion of the dogs in shelters in our area. However, we also rescue and assist dogs of many different breeds and types. We also work to strengthen human communities and the bond between humans and animals through owner support, shelter support, and collaboration with organizations that help people and animals in need.

Our organization is named after the beloved racehorse, Ferdinand. Despite winning prestigious races such as the Kentucky Derby and Breeders Cup Classic and being named the Horse of the Year in 1987, Ferdinand met his fate at a Japanese slaughterhouse after a lackluster career as a stud. In response to this tragedy, it brought forward renewed interest in Thoroughbred aftercare to prevent other ex-racehorses from joining Ferdinand in the slaughter pipeline.

Another key area of our program is to advocate for animals experiencing neglect, abandonment, or cruelty by working with local law enforcement and community partners.
