VIFF is among the top five film festivals in North America, with 150,000 admissions and 380 films from 75 countries. The 16-day festival is a microcosm of its home city: cosmopolitan, friendly, culturally complex, laid-back and accessible. VIFF’s slogan is “Same Planet. Different Worlds.” Films are exhibited within 10 main programming strands. Three of these are pillars of the festival and help make it unique: the major Nonfiction Features section (42% of the 232 feature-length films screened in 2009 were docs); the popular Canadian Images program makes VIFF the biggest showcase of Canadian film in the world; and the Dragons & Tigers: The Cinemas of East Asia program is the largest exhibition of East Asian film outside that region.
We work together with other Hope Story organizations in a multinational context to rescue orphaned and unprotected children and place them in safe, family-style homes where they can thrive in an atmosphere of acceptance, holistic care, and Christian love. In many places we also build schools and develop relevant community impact programs including outreach centers, medical clinics, care centers and our “Keeping Families Together” initiatives. In Canada, Hope Story is a gathering point for men, women and children who dream of long-term sustainable change in the life of another person as a practical, meaningful expression of the heart of God. Espace-Famille Villeray was born in 1988 on the willingness of parents to afford respite through a babysitting service. Today, our organization reaches more than 300 families and aims to contribute to the well-being of expectant parents and families with young children (0-5 years old) by enhancing parenting and promoting the relationship of parent-child through a holistic, proactive and respectful approach. More now than ever in the Villeray district, Espace-Famille is an essential resource in early childhood. Through the Daycare service, service-home support for parents of newborns or in our activities, Espace-Famille Villeray helps families learn, share and assist each other with their role as parents or future parents, in addition to providing a safe place for supporting the development of their children.

ABCD: Art Building Children's Dreams is a small, dedicated group of people who are working to improve the lives of close to 50 disadvantaged children in rural Tanzania. Our dream is that with the education that our donors and supporters are funding for these children, they will become healthy, happy and contributing members of their own villages and communities. The children's innate creativity is utilized as a vehicle for helping themselves out of poverty towards well-being through education. When we visit the children and their families annually, the children are given the opportunity and the instructional help to make art, which they love doing! It comes naturally. This art is brought home to Canada and shared with the children's supporters and with the general public in order to raise funds for their school fees, uniforms, supplies and other needs they may have.
Kartemquin Films is a home for independent filmmakers developing documentary as a vehicle to deepen our understanding of society through everyday human drama. Focusing on people whose lives are most directly affected by social and political change and who are often overlooked or misrepresented by the media, Kartemquin's films open up a dialogue, both in communities and between the general public and policymakers. Kartemquin documentaries are supported by civic engagement strategies that are developed with local and national partners to foster understanding, change thinking, and build support for social change. As a locally and nationally-recognized media arts organization, Kartemquin acts as a trusted bridge between communities and the media, fosters the growth of emerging filmmaking voices passionate about social issues and media policy, and encourages staff and stakeholders to play a role in advocating for a strong public media.
The Memorial honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S. during World War II, the more than 400,000 who died, and the millions who supported the war effort from home. Symbolic of the defining event of the 20th Century, the Memorial is a monument to the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people to the common defense of the nation and to the broader causes of peace and freedom from tyranny throughout the world. It will inspire future generations of Americans, deepening their appreciation of what the World War II generation accomplished in securing freedom and democracy. Above all, the Memorial stands as an important symbol of American national unity, a timeless reminder of the moral strength and awesome power that can flow when a free people are at once united and bonded together in a common and just cause.
Dandelion Dancetheater is situated at the crossroads of dance, theater, music, community activism, healing, and new performance forms. The company is committed to the individual and intersecting artistic visions of Kimiko Guthrie and Eric Kupers. Our work is built from a fascination with interdisciplinary experimentation, in-depth collaboration, vulnerability, risk-taking, and the truths that come from looking at the world from an “outsider” perspective. We view the exploration of the endless possibilities of the human body as a potent means for personal and collective growth and share this exploration with diverse populations through performance, teaching, speaking, community events, video, and writing. As an organization, Dandelion Dancetheater is a launching pad and creative home for several ongoing, in-depth projects. Most projects involve multiple branches of Dandelion, and so stretch across categories.
