The University of Alberta

The University of Alberta’s vision since its inception 100 years ago has been to be one of the world’s great universities for the public good, an institution for the “uplifting of the whole people” in the words of our first president, Henry Marshall Tory. Today that vision endures and is built upon a foundation of institutional values, vision, mission, and cornerstones. The university is one of the largest employers in Alberta, with more than 14,000 full- and part-time employees. Nearly 70,000 direct and indirect jobs in Alberta are the result of the existence of the University of Alberta. TEC Edmonton, a partnership between the university and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, brings the results of innovation to the benefit of Albertans by fostering commercialization of research. Technology transfer stimulates economic growth through the creation of spinoff companies and technology licensing to existing companies.

Museum of Living Memory

The “Musée de la mémoire vivante” is a modern institution with a participating concept. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are displayed. They are set up with the visitors’ contributions through testimonies and artifacts rather than being conceived and perceived as an end in itself. The exhibitions are meant to incite exchanges, discussions and testimonies, always with the purpose of putting the people and their experiences in the spotlight. At the museum, two studios are available to whoever desires to record his testimony or life experience. Those testimonies are kept for the same reason than objects are in a conventional museum. The different themes approached are in this way not forgotten, Those life experiences are available to anyone who desires to listen to them for learning, social reasons or leasure. It is a true democratization of life stories and experiences.

FOUNDATION OF GREATER MONTRÉAL

Founded in 1999, the FGM is modeled after the 700-odd community foundations that already exist in Canada and the United States. Their versatility, flexibility, and effectiveness allow these foundations to satisfy both the wishes of donors and the needs of the charitable organizations they benefit. The FGM differs from other charitable organizations in that it builds endowment funds, the revenues from which are used to support charitable work in a number of areas, primarily health, education, social development, arts and culture, and the environment. Donations to the FGM thus serve the Greater Montreal community in perpetuity.
