WYCLIFFE COLLEGE

Since its founding in 1877, Wycliffe has been an Anglican school, an evangelical school and a school nestled in the midst of a great university. This puts us at the very intersection of the Church, the academy and the wider society. One can see the effect of our evangelical heritage in our commitment to evangelism, to growth in holiness and to a curriculum centred on the Word of God and the Nicene faith of the church. We are ourselves an ecumenical school, welcoming students from many denominations, even as we are situated in the wider ecumenical setting of the Toronto School of Theology. These factors together provide an educational context that is moored solidly in the faith, guided firmly by the tradition of the Church and opened fully to the challenge of the intellect. We are in fact the only theological college in North America where you can find the confluence of these three characteristics.

Developing Scholars is a registered Canadian charity that provides opportunities for Guatemalan children living in poor and rural areas of their country to attend school and other educational opportunities that they and their families could not otherwise afford. Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in the Americas and the rural areas are particularly poor. In a few selected communities, we work with community leaders and our local representatives to identify and support educational projects of various kinds. We have successfully started a middle school (Samox), where school previously ended at the elementary level, which has now been funded by the government. In the community of La Primavera, we started a high school ,providing teacher salaries, academic material and supplies, as well as training workshops. We also provide individual scholarships to 30 academically qualified students at the high school and university level, assisting them in reaching their academic goals.

PLAY IT FORWARD - PORTLAND

Play It Forward believes that all children need access to the M.A.G.I.C. of music. Studies show and research has found that learning a musical instrument boosts – Mental Wellness, Agility, Grit, Independence and Community and we think that is MAGIC. However, due to such factors as poverty and historic marginalization, many children cannot access the kind of instrumental instruction their more affluent peers enjoy. We believe providing free instrumental lessons and free instruments can bridge the gap between desire and opportunity that keeps many children from enjoying the many gifts of playing music.
