COWICHAN WOMEN AGAINST VIOLENCE SOCIETY

Cowichan Women Against Violence Society's (CWAVS) main purpose is to provide shelter and a range of services for women and children seeking safety and responding to physical or sexual abuse or violence. Services include a transition house for women seeking shelter from an abusive situation; crisis support; women's support group; counselling, information and support for women; community-based victim services; children's counselling and groups; pre-employment services for women facing barriers to independence related to past abuse or trauma; prevention activities; and community development activities designed to promote safety, develop capacities, provide community voice, and connect community members with local government and organizations. CWAVS also provides information, support and public education to community organizations and agencies about violence against women and children; and works collaboratively on mutual community goals.

Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis

Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis provides support to women who are experiencing physical, emotional, sexual and/or financial abuse. All our services are free of charge. Our services include: -Marianne's Place (a 28-bed shelter for abused women and their children); -The Transitional and Housing Support Program (non-residential support for women who have experienced abuse); -The Sexual Assault Centre (support for women who have experienced sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, or stalking, also support for friends/family of survivors); -The Rural Women's Support Program (support throughtout the county of Wellington); -24-hour Crisis Line (support and information, including access to all above mentioned progams at 519-836-5710 or 1-800- 265-SAFE). We offer one-to-one counselling, support groups, information and referrals, accompaniment to court/doctor etc., public education and professional trainings, safety planning, and resources.

Our mission is to organize the targeted groups- Women, children Youths and marginalized communities against Caste/ Gender in-equality, other social evils and help them to improve their health and economical status. We hope to make them self reliant so that they have a proper participation in the decision-making bodies in the society and are able to enjoy their rights.

We plan for and fund our own activities, Arts / Culture Programs offer ceramics,traditional bead and leather workshops. We advocte in mainstream by sitting on Advisory Groups like: Brock Un., Niagara College Education and Niagara Abor. Children's Planning Councils. We house a reference library, with videos, a variety of self help books,business, reference texts,reports and studies. We offer an Aboriginal Child Advocate program to families who are in contact with the local CAS. We also offer an Aboriginal Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process for these families. We are currently ACCEPTING DONATIONS AND SPONSORSHIPS TOWARDS OUR 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS. Contact us for sponsorship info. Our biggest struggle is ongoing funding as we are a wholly independent organization, soley operated by native women, by for and about native women and their families.
