EMI strives to heal, enrich and enhance the quality of life for the most vulnerable and marginalized population within Kenyan communities. Approximately 60% of the adult population in Hamilton do not have the literacy skills needed to meet the everyday demands at home, work and in the community. We help English-speaking adults to improve their basic (grade 1-grade 5) reading, writing and math skills through the work of trained, volunteer tutors. The student and tutor pair meet for approximately 4 hours per week. We also provide the option of Small Group instruction where 5-8 students learn basic skills in a class setting. Small Groups meet 9 hours per week.

Flemingdon Park is a fascinating place – a landlocked triangle containing the most diverse community in the world. Flemingdon Park Ministry serves a population of 27,000 from 130 ethnic groups who speak 90 different languages. With a focus on the poor and marginalized, the Ministry is a Christian presence that respects all differences. Amongst its programs and partnerships is a busy Drop-In, Seniors’ and Women’s Groups, After School programs and Food & Friendship nights. Its STAR project offers a transformative process for job-seekers. With more than 10,000 visits each year, the Ministry empowers this unique community to access their dreams.
The South Granville Seniors Centre (est. 1979) is a caring and friendly day-time resource and activity centre that promotes and supports healthy and independent lifestyles by providing programs and services that meet the diverse needs and interests of seniors in our community. We are about connecting. Connecting seniors to their community. The South Granville Seniors Centre is a place where friendships are made, where stories are told, where people’s achievements are celebrated, where smiles and hugs are given freely. It is a place where seniors’ ideas and wisdom are valued. This is a place where we recognize the valuable contributions seniors make to the Centre and the community as a whole. We offer a wide range of wellness, social, and educational programs to our over 400 members. Programs we offer range from a healthy 3-course lunch, computer classes, tai chi, and close to 40 additional programs and services. We have a small, but dedicated, staff team and over 120 volunteers!
Community means so many things to so many people, and the world to us. In all we do and all we say, we are all for community. We are the Kitimat Community Foundation and as a Foundation we have the opportunity to serve and enhance our community through connecting donors to community needs and opportunities. Community Foundations can be set up to serve the entire spectrum of community interests and needs.

The International Board on Books for Young People believes in the ability of children's books to bridge cultures and, ultimately, to promote peace. IBBY Canada connects Canadians with those abroad who share this common purpose. Donations to IBBY Canada help build libraries and support literacy programs such as the Children in Crisis Fund; support national authors, illustrators, and storytellers on the international stage; and bring books to children all over the world.
