VolunteerConnector

Volunteer Calgary is one of Canada's largest and most active volunteer centres. We work with our more than 400 nonprofit member organizations to enhance community volunteer engagement. We offer number of services to the Calgary community including an online searchable database of volunteer opportunities, training and development for managers of volunteers, and Western Canada's largest library of resources on issues related to nonprofit management. In addition, we offer the following programs: Leadership Calgary: A 10 month program designed to encourage existing and aspiring leaders to work collaboratively to build a healthy and caring community Boardmatch: An online matching service to connect individuals with appropriate positions on nonprofit boards Paint the Town: a program designed to promote and support employee volunteerism Leadership Awards: Annual awards to celebrate and honour the achievments of outstanding volunteers in our community

Immigrant Services Calgary

Established in 1977 as the Calgary Immigrant Aid Society, Immigrant Services Calgary is one of Alberta’s longest serving and most comprehensive settlement agencies. Last year, the agency assisted 20,327 immigrants and refugees. Working in partnership with various funders, the government and other service providers, Immigrant Services Calary provides a wide range of programs including: -Settlement and Integration Services for immigrants, refugees, temporary foreign workers and their families -Translation and Interpretation -English Language Assessment and Referral -Family Support Programs (Community Access Project, Men's Program, Anti-Racism and Human Rights Outreach, and Connecting Immigrant Seniors) -Children and Parents Programs such as the Pre-School Program, Literacy Program, Toy and Books Library, Supportive Counselling and Healthy Start Calgary for pre/post natal mothers -Employment and Skills Development Services -Youth Engagement Programs -Volunteer Opportunies

COWICHAN WOMEN AGAINST VIOLENCE SOCIETY

Cowichan Women Against Violence Society's (CWAVS) main purpose is to provide shelter and a range of services for women and children seeking safety and responding to physical or sexual abuse or violence. Services include a transition house for women seeking shelter from an abusive situation; crisis support; women's support group; counselling, information and support for women; community-based victim services; children's counselling and groups; pre-employment services for women facing barriers to independence related to past abuse or trauma; prevention activities; and community development activities designed to promote safety, develop capacities, provide community voice, and connect community members with local government and organizations. CWAVS also provides information, support and public education to community organizations and agencies about violence against women and children; and works collaboratively on mutual community goals.

Community Foundation of Nova Scotia

The Community Foundation of Nova Scotia is a public charitable foundation created by and for the people of Nova Scotia.   We engage in three core activities:   * we establish and maintain endowment funds on behalf of private donors, businesses, charities, and communities which, in turn, support registered charities and other eligible recipients within the province of NS;   * we engage in strategic grant-making; and * we provide leadership with respect to a broad range of community issues, connecting people who care with causes that matter.   We are a member of Community Foundations of Canada, which represents a network of 168 community foundations nationally, and who together hold close to $2.5 Billion in assets. In 2008, Canada's community foundations granted nearly $170 Million to organizations doing good work in our communities each and every day.

People For a Healthy Community on Gabriola Society

PHC provides direct services & support by islanders to islanders. The programs and services we offer are aimed at mitigating the impact of isolation, poverty, unemployment, mental illness and addictions. We believe that all of us are needed to help fulfill our aim of an inclusive, strong, prosperous community that is responsive, caring and sustainable. By building local capacity and connections we strengthen the social networks that make Gabriola a safe and healthy place to live. With an emphasis on early intervention, prevention, education and resource sharing, our organization provides the following services to children, families and individuals: • Food Bank, • Soup Socials • Community Resource Centre • Christmas Bureau • Low to no cost counselling • Housing Support, • Community Gardens for seniors, children and people with barriers as well as a Food Bank Garden • Citizen Advocate Consulting (in collaboration with Nanaimo Citizen Advocacy Assoc)

Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA)

URBAN AGRICULTURE/COMMUNITY FOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM Since 1993, thousands of young people have been in touch with our food & garden initiatives. Current programs include: 1) Youth Urban Agriculture Internships -training 12 youth annually in urban organic agriculture and facilitation of community food programs 2) Growing Kids - food & garden education for low income elementary schools 3) Vancouver Community Agriculture Network (VCAN) - helping support new community gardens with training & resources INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM EYA is currently working in the slums of Kenya to improve the living conditions for the youth living in Nairobi. Based on the successful 2007/2008 waste management program, EYA is creating a network that will connect the youth of Nairobi to help each other clean up their neighbourhoods and earn an income while doing it.

At any time of day or night, intervention workers are present to welcome youth and listen to their problems. In an informal setting, easier for a youth to relate to, we accompany them in their development. Housing Emergency shelter(three days) A youth between 12 and 17 years of age. Short-term stays (up to 60 days) On a voluntary basis, and with their parent's consent, a 16 or 17 year old. Support for ex-residents After a stay in our residence we continue to work with youth in order to help them avoid the isolation of their former life on the street. Street outreach work Street outreach work means creating and maintaining connections. Activities The participation of youth in activities such as Vitr'art, La marge s'expose, Chaocirk or Cirko-Vélo These services are also available for parents: Consultation by telephone Family or parent meetings Monthly meetings for intervention workers or parents information and support groups

Matsqui-Abbotsford Impact Society

Serving the communities of Abbotsford and Mission for over 25 years, IMPACT is a program that provides services to youth (under age 25) and their families and other supports who have been directly or indirectly affected by alcohol and drug use, abuse and addiction. We work within the schools, in the community and at our facility in Abbotsford. We offer activity programs for youth, individual counselling, family counselling, workshops, groups and special programs for parents, community members, and educators. We believe that the best resource that youth can have to help them grow and move forward in life is a strong connection with responsible and non-judgemental peers and adult allies who have their best interests in mind. All of our services aim to help youth identify their values and goals and then to empower them with skills and support that will help them to live in better harmony with their values and to pursue their goals.

TGC's programs include: Community Eco-Gardens: A multi-faceted program engaging children & adults from diverse communities in ecological gardening and food security initiatives. Lost River Walks: Guided public walks along buried waterways to find out how human and natural water systems form our urban life support system, to connect with watersheds and take action for a restored ecosystem Presentations & Workshops: Interactive sessions providing practical information on green living to groups and communities across the city. Eco-Themed Employee Activities: Meaningful activities for corporate staff volunteer days, team building and Lunch & Learn workshops. Apartment Greening: Door to Door education for tenants of high-rise buildings on greening initiatives including waste reduction, and conservation of water and energy. EMBERS (Eastside Movement for Business and Economic Renewal Society)

EMBERS uses an enterprising approach to creating economic and employment opportunities through three program offerings. EMBERS Ventures helps people start and grow small businesses; EMBERS Staffing Solutions, a temporary employment service, connects companies with workers; and EMBERS Green Renovations provides weatherization and energy upgrades to buildings. EMBERS was established as a non- profit community economic development organization on August 31, 2001 after a year-long research and multi-stakeholder consultation process focused on revitalizing the Downtown Eastside. To date we have assisted more than 600 entrepreneurs plan, start or grow their micro-enterprises; we have provided temporary work placements to more than 700 low-income individuals, more than half of whom have transitioned to full time work; and we have trained 10 individuals in weatherization and green renovation techniques.

Keewaytinook Okimakanak Community Initiatives

The Chiefs established Keewaytinook Okimakanak (KO) to create opportunity and build the capacity needed for First Nations people who choose to live, work and raise their families in the North. From its humble beginnings twenty years ago KO established a network of resources devoted to supporting healthy and sustainable community development. Community members manage and operate highly technological programs such as KO Tele-Medicine, which links physicians and other health care professionals in the South with patients in the far north through state-of-the-art tele-medicine i-docs operated by Community Telehealth Coordinators (CTCs); KiHS, the first Ministry of Education approved digital school in Ontario where hundreds of youths are pursuing high school diplomas without the need to leave their homes and families, and K-Net Services, Canada’s First Nations leader in telecommunications, connectivity and the development of broadband applications
