Habitat Services was established in 1987 to help address concerns of boarding homes with very poor living conditions and to improve the quality of life for tenants. The concept of using a contract to standardize services and improve housing standards in boarding homes was developed. The details were worked out in consultation with consumer/survivors, advocates, representatives of the provincial and municipal governments, mental health workers and boarding home owners/operators. The result was the Habitat Services contract model which is unique in Ontario. It is based on a contract between Habitat Services, a non-profit agency, and the owners of private sector and non-profit boarding homes. Regular monitoring of the houses ensures compliance with the contract standards. On-site housing support services for tenants are provided. Habitat funded homes provide permanent housing for 931 adults at 45 different locations across Toronto.
Habitat for Humanity is an independent, non-profit home builder dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing. Our philosophy is “A Hand Up, Not A Hand Out”, and our mission is to provide affordable housing for low-income families in the Niagara Region. Habitat for Humanity Niagara, incorporated in 1993, achieves this through the construction or renovation of simple, decent, affordable homes. We improve the quality of life in our community by working to eliminate poverty housing. We seek partnership opportunities to work side-by-side with financially vulnerable families. Habitat houses are sold to families, not given to them free of charge. In addition, families help to build their own home. By building homes at low cost and not charging interest on the mortgage, Habitat for Humanity is able to provide an opportunity, or a "hand up", to buy a home for families that would not otherwise qualify for a conventional mortgage.
Conceived by a group of visionary parents of developmentally challenged individuals, Parents for Community Living was incorporated in 1989 as a not-for-profit charitable organization. The dream was to create an atmosphere where developmentally challenged adults could grow in physical, emotional and spiritual well-being and become valued members of our community. Currently, PCL has 7 residential homes for 32 developmentally challenged adults and 2 respite homes. The children's respite home houses 2 children on a permanent basis and 4 for respite care. The adult respite home second houses 2 adults on a permanent basis and 6 for respite care. The efforts and financial contributions of MCSS, MCYS, numerous friends, volunteers and parents have helped to make our dreams a reality. Continued support from the community and individuals is critical to meeting the needs for additional homes and expanded services.
