The Ontario Safety League was formed in 1913 by a group of business and community leaders in response to the increasing threats to public safety brought about by the automobile. The mission was to reduce preventable deaths, injuries and destruction on Ontario's roads through public education and safety awareness. Ontario Safety League's mandate continues to be safety through education. Today, the League is recognized as one of North America's leading traffic safety organizations. Inner Winnipeg faces a number of challenges. Not every family or community has access to the same economic opportunities and social supports, or even to the basics that children need to succeed. Impoverished living conditions can result in a number of other challenges like neighbourhood violence, emotional trauma, homelessness, and hunger. Children living in these environments are coping with high stress levels that can impact learning and affect how well they perform in school. Access to education is a serious issue because it affects the quality of life and prospects of children, families, and neighbourhoods. It is a root cause of many other issues including joblessness, crime and violence, poor physical and mental health, and neighbourhood decline. The Westland Foundation believes that post secondary education is critical to the future of the students we support and to the betterment of our society.

The York School began as a non-profit corporation in 1965, operating several Montessori-based nursery school programmes until 1978, when it opened an elementary school in North Toronto. In 1997, York was designated an International Baccalaureate World School authorized to offer the IB Diploma in the last two years of high school. In March 2005, York became the first school in Canada - and the fourth in North America - accredited to offer a continuous, integrated programme from JK to university entrance. From the Early Years Programme (JK-SK) to Grade 12, our programme emphasizes development of research, problem solving and time-management skills within the context of the IB curriculum.
