Founded in 1983, the mission of Writers in the Schools (WITS) is to engage children in the joy and power of reading and writing. WITS was founded through the University of Houston's renowned creative writing program to bring some of our nation's most talented writers into school and community classrooms to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children. The WITS program is an effective force for educational change, integrating arts and education to ignite a love of learning in more than 400,000 children and their teachers since its founding. WITS leads an international movement for creative learning, helping children and teachers across the world explore literacy in creative ways.

Iurban Teen

iUrban Teen is a nationally recognized program focused on bringing STEM+C+A education to youth of color ages 13 to 18. Youth receive hands-on exposure to a variety of careers that step them outside their current boundaries. Our target demographics are African American, Latino and Native American youth, however, the program is inclusive of all youth who fall within the Non-Traditional STEM Learners category, including youth with disabilities.OUR GOALSIncrease awareness and knowledge of STEM+C+A careers and training.Provide mentoring and internship opportunities.Create a collaborative learning model for youth to continue to use in various surroundings.Create a personal development plan in an interactive environment.
