GiGi's Playhouse Canton

Programs at GiGi’s Playhouse offer foundational learning opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community. GiGi’s Playhouse programs  are a place for parents/caregivers to share ideas and network with one another. We invite caregivers to communicate their needs, questions and concerns with one another, and promote connections to be made in support of each other. GiGi’s programs embrace the family and help aid the development of a healthy, successful relationship between parents, individuals with Down syndrome and siblings. GiGi’s Playhouse programs support families in developing high expectations for their son or daughter with Down syndrome. Many families are blindsided by a diagnosis of Down syndrome in pregnancy or at birth. GiGi’s programs aim to help parents overcome the diagnosis and maintain high expectations for their child to achieve success in social, educational and employment opportunities in the future.  Our staff and volunteers support parents in maintaining high expectations, even through challenging periods of time. By encouraging their child to follow routines and participate fully, parents take a big step in recognizing their child’s potential.

INICIATIVES SOLIDARIES

The Initiatives Solidaries association began to take shape around 1992 at the initiative of a group of people who were aware of the situation of exclusion of disadvantaged young people and people in a situation of deprivation of liberty in the city of Valencia. These people, involved in different socio-educational projects of the Domus Pacis Association, created Iniciatives Solidaries in July 1993, a non-profit, independent association, with its own legal personality and full capacity to act, administer, dispose of its assets and give a comprehensive response to the problems of the aforementioned group. Based on a common philosophical and methodological affinity, we began with an objective, to prevent situations of social exclusion with minors, young people, prisoners and former prisoners while raising awareness in society about this problem and involving it in change through awareness and volunteering. Since the beginning of its journey, there have been many people who have passed through the entity, many difficulties and needs that have been overcome and many hopes for which it continues to work in favor of prevention, integration of the most disadvantaged and in favor of solidarity. Throughout this time, projects have been consolidated, intervention pathways developed and adapted, networks and collaboration forums expanded; Work has been done for the solidarity of citizens with the most disadvantaged and new channels of social participation have been opened. We managed to be declared a Public Utility Entity in 2009 (NAL 125077). Step by step, programs, work formulas, specialized care, centers, agreements and collaborations have been strengthened. At Initiatives Solidaries we are a non-profit association regulated by LO 1/2002 of March 22, accredited as a Second Chance School of Valencia that has carried out our work since 1993 with the aim of contributing to the social well-being of the community by preventing situations of social exclusion in especially disadvantaged sectors: adolescents, young people at risk of social exclusion and people who are or have been deprived of liberty. To achieve this, we intervene from comprehensive training, developing individualized educational, training and socio-labor insertion itineraries taking into account their needs and difficulties, and which affect the lines of protection of minors, basic education, vocational training, personal and interpersonal competence, information, participation. community, advice and socio-labor guidance through the Second Chance Schools model, pioneering and legitimized, closely linked to the business sector, recognized and supported by public institutions. The scope and extension of Initiatives Solidares is national, developing our actions mainly in the Valencian Community. The entity has three centers that are located in the city of Valencia, in the neighborhoods of Torrefiel, Benimamet and Tres Forques, and two inside the Valencia Penitentiary Center, located in the town of Picassent. In addition, we have a large multidisciplinary team, made up of professionals from the social and volunteer fields, working in networks with different entities and organizations in the social, labor and educational fields to achieve our goals. Initiatives Solidaries aims to: Promote the Social Well-being of the Community, through educational, training, guidance and counseling actions, aimed at the culturally, socially and economically disadvantaged population: childhood, adolescence, youth, families, women, migrants, long-term unemployed people, prisoners and ex-prisoners who are in a situation of social exclusion. Facilitate the social and/or labor insertion of the most culturally, socially and economically disadvantaged population: childhood, adolescence, youth, families, long-term unemployed people, prisoners and former prisoners who are in a situation of social exclusion. Promote volunteering and citizen participation among professionals and the general population through training and awareness actions and in the business community through agreements, conventions, collaborations and/or specific actions or within the framework of corporate social responsibility (CSR). . Fundacion Tiempo de Juego

Tiempo de Juego is a non-profit entity that seeks to foster the adequate use of free time among children and youth in the most vulnerable areas of Colombia. The foundation seeks to distance children from the social ills that surround them and educate them through strategies such as sports and cultural activities. Tiempo de Juego's mission is to spawn social cohesion and development through sports, cultural, recreational, and formative tools whose purpose is the generation of competencies, promotion of values, and the effective use of free time in a responsible and conscientious manner, generating a positive and replicable impact towards a better quality of life for the community and its surroundings. Tiempo de Juego was established in 2006, as a project for the "Communication for Development" program through the "Universidad de la Sabana". After an exhaustive study for more than three years in Cazuca, one of the most marginalized, deprived and violent areas of our country, it was detected that the lack of education and excess of time of the youth, and the fact about 70 percent of the population is classified displaced, was making them more vulnerable to joining different gangs, drug addiction, incurring early pregnancies, as well as being part of the armed outlaw groups that recruit them for very little money. Using soccer as a recreational tool for value formation, accompanied by art workshops, cultural and educational courses, we gathered 400 children between 5 and 18, and the foundation began to inculcate the proper use of leisure time as a positive and useful way to encourage the kids into a brighter and more positive future. Ever since Tiempo de Juego began to operate, the children and young people have changed as has the neighborhood environment. When they celebrate goals or they read a book, this does not seem the most depressing sector of Cundinamarca area, which according to official statistics, over the past 5 years, has had more than 850 murders of young people; this is the area with the highest rate of displacement population second to Choco. A zone where poverty and malnutrition, joining the gangs to participate in the conflict is just a daily experience, where those who are growing only aspire to be part of an armed group that inhabit the area. Tiempo de Juego uses soccer as its main intervention tool to address social problems due to its capacity to convene people and its pedagogical possibilities. The foundation belongs to the football street world network, associated to the FIFA, and applies the FIFA approved rules of street football as the mechanism for the formation of values, formal education as a basis of democracy and the cultural workshops looking to build a fairer society. Also, we work out the values with the parents to achieve a proper family environment. Since 2008, Tiempo de Juego has opened another chapter in Cartagena, Atlantic Cost City, making possible those children and youth of "Las Faldas de la Popa" also to receive these benefits and rights.
