The mission of the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE), formerly the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), is to improve the scientific basis of environmental decision-making. When decision-making processes utilize the latest science, the resulting solutions to environmental challenges are better for people and the planet. Operating in the interface between science and policy, GCSE engages both scientists and decision-makers across all levels of government.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Annual Lecture Series -- We organize and present annually eight free monthly public lectures (September to April). Our speakers -- academics, professionals, writers, poets, visual and material artists, present on a variety of contemporary and historical subjects. A lengthy question and answer period for the audience follows each lecture. Maitland Banting Silver Quill Award and Young Poet Award -- Awards of up to $200 are offered annually for originality combined with excellent command of language, in both short-story fiction and poetry, to winners and runner-ups in the HPL's Power of the Pen competition. da Vinci Science Fair Award -- Awards of up to $300 are offered annually to local students entered in the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF). Our judges look for work that combines originality with sound, demonstrated understanding of the scientific method. We donate annually to the HPL to help defray the HPL's Power of the Pen expenses.

The Northwest Abortion Access Fund is an abortion fund serving Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. Trained, compassionate volunteer advocates run our toll-free hotline. We help people pay for their abortion care by sending funding directly to the clinic. We also help people get to and from the clinic. And we make sure people traveling for care have a safe place to stay. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit and a member of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF), a membership organization of over 70 funds across the United States.
