Creating a Community Commons The Gabriola Commons is a place where sustainability, community and agriculture meet. The Gabriola Commons, located on Gabriola Island, a northern Gulf Island in the Salish Sea, features 26 acres of peaceful rural landscapes. The property includes connecting pathways, open vistas, meditative spaces, vibrant community gardens, learning and meeting spaces for the use and enjoyment of the public. Your donation supports the creation of a unique and distinct “community commons”: land and facilities meeting community needs; engaging and celebrating community participation; providing the community with agricultural, environmental, recreational and social benefits. The Gabriola Commons is a place for everyone.

At CiRCLe M (Centre for Rural Community Leadership & Ministry) we care a lot about rural churches and communities! And we think that they ought to be more closely connected. Our central purpose is rural ministry leadership development. Our objective is to build bridges between rural churches and other institutions and organizations concerned with the well-being of rural communities. Our method is to develop and coordinate instruction, research, mentors, materials and conferences towards our purpose and objective. We are interdenominational and do not require the folks we work with to subscribe to a specific statement of faith. We work to help all churches strengthen their ministries.

The Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge main mission is the care and comforts of the donkeys residing at the Refuge. The Refuge is a permanent home for all donkeys who arrive at our gate and we work very hard to provide a safe and secure home for the resident donkeys. Our second focus is to provide a venue for Private tours for all special needs adults, children and seniors in our community. The tours provide our special visitors with an opportunity to connect with the donkeys and enjoy the healing characteristics of a Donkey Hug in a quiet farm atmosphere. Donkeys love people and enjoy the attention of the visitors as much as the people enjoy the benefits of the Donkey Magic.

Our Mission is to raise awareness of the vulnerability of South African species and other endangeredspecies through educational experiences, as well as ethically breeding cheetahs in captivity. At Cheetah Experience, our animals come first, and everything we do is for our animals. Our current focusis to ensure that our Cheetah Breeding project aids in the conservation of the Cheetah, by using the DNA samples taken from our Cheetahs to maintain genetic diversity. We work along-side other ethical and responsible projects to help secure the Cheetahs future survival.From a recent study in 2016, the global population of the cheetah is estimated at 7,100 individuals, and confined to 9% of their historical distributional range. Our Long Term visionis to be able to release some animals into a protected yet self-sustaining natural habitat where animals are still monitored by researchers and medical experts but live free. Understanding their needs, behaviour and instincts plays a key role in saving animals from extinction.

With roots that date back to 1936 when Nanaimo’s first vocational training school opened its doors, Vancouver Island University (VIU) shares a rich history and connectedness with its communities. VIU has evolved into a dynamic, internationally known university supporting a student population in excess of 18,000 full-and part-time learners, including 1100 international students, over 1500 aboriginal students, and employing over 2,000 faculty and staff. VIU operates four campuses including a main campus in Nanaimo and regional campuses in Duncan, Powell River and Parksville•Qualicum. VIU is also the proud owner of Milner Gardens and Woodlands in Qualicum Beach, recently named one of the top 10 public gardens in Canada. Offering programs from basic literacy to vocational programs, trades, undergraduate and graduate degrees, VIU encourages all students to explore their potential, discover more about their world and excel in both life and learning.

Traditional Chinese opera is a distinctive and comprehensive performing art that combines typically Chinese music, singing, dialogue, pantomime, acrobatics and martial arts. We are the only non-profit Cantonese opera society in Vancouver endeavour to introduce our art form to the mainstream population and other ethnic groups. We have English subtitles for our major performances. We provide pre-show workshops "How to appreciate Chinese opera" to our audiences. We have on-going outreach and audience building programs. We endeavour to engage local artists, community and business to ensure that the unique culture of Cantonese opera is accessible to everybody, from the very young to the elderly. Every year we produce three largre productions of Cantonese opera. The majority of our artists and technical crews are Canadians. We showcase our emerging artists in our annual Cantonese Opera Extravaganza and provide them an opportunity to shine and purse for artistic excellence.

FLAP is a charitable not-for-profit, founded in 1993 to address the issue of bird collisions with human-built structures. Since its inception, FLAP volunteers have recovered over 59,000 birds from 166 species, all victims of collisions with a handful of buildings in the Greater Toronto Area. It is unsettling to add that 64 of these species are in serious population decline. Our dedication has placed bird collisions with buildings on the wildlife conservation map, and in doing so, has proven this issue to be the leading cause of bird death across North America. As a world-first organization, FLAP has mobilized the NGO, business, educational and government sectors to find progressive ways to protect birds from the hazards of our built environment. FLAP has created models for replicability of both our awareness and rescue initiatives, like those now running strong in New York, Chicago, Montreal and Minneapolis. North Cascades Institute's mission is to conserve and restore Northwest environments through education. In our 21 year history, we have served more than 65,000 children, adults and families in field-based programs emphasizing hands-on discovery and stewardship of the North Cascades--one of the wildest, most biologically diverse landscapes in North America. Our Mountain School, watershed education programs and summer camps teach youth about the natural world. Adult seminars, teacher workshops and our graduate curriculum serve to prepare community, educational and environmental leaders. North Cascades Institute connects people, nature and community through the lasting power of education.

Delaware Nature Society’s mission is to connect people with the natural world to improve our environment through education, conservation, and advocacy. Founded in 1964, we are the state affiliate for the National Wildlife Federation. We provide the tools for communities to take action to protect the environment through land preservation, wildlife habitats, and watershed stewardship.We manage 2,000 acres of land, including 4 nature preserves, educational sites: Ashland Nature Center, Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, DuPont Environmental Education Center, and Coverdale Farm Preserve. Our organizational priorities are focused on: Working & Natural Lands, Healthy Waters and Protecting Habitats & Wildlife. We envision a healthy and sustainable environment.
