The BC Council for Families works to create healthy families in a healthy society. We are a non-profit, non-governmental organization that has worked on behalf of families, and people who serve families, since 1977. We: * empower families by providing educational resources on topics such as parenting, childhood development, parent-teen relationships, work-life balance, suicide awareness and more; * support family education professionals by co-ordinating professional development workshops and symposiums, and disseminating research and resources; * advocate for families by taking an active role in advisory commitees, task forces and initiatives that promote risk prevention and early support for children, youth and families in all their diversity
We build simple, decent homes using donations of financial support, building materials and time that are all generated through the local community. After investing hundreds of hours to build their homes and those of their neighbours, our families assume no-interest, no down-payment mortgages that reflect the market value of the home. Monthly mortgage payments are continually reinvested into future home construction. Habitat for Humanity’s success rests in its fundamental belief that a community can create its own solutions for those in need by coming together to provide a hand up — not a handout. Habitat for Humanity provides the framework to build homes for families and hope for generations.
Our Values: Housing for All – Access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should be available to everyone. Human Dignity – We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being. We respect the people we serve and those who help us in this effort. People are our greatest resource. Partnership – We can best achieve our mission through meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with others. Diversity and Inclusiveness – There is a role for everyone committed to our vision, mission and values. We seek to enrich our organization through diversity.
When a youth's stomach is empty, everything else is secondary. Students arriving at school hungry do not perform well in the classroom, have difficulty concentrating, display behavioural problems, are less alert and often lethargic. Student nutrition programs impact the physical, emotional social, cognitive, behavioural and academic needs of children and youth. Breakfast provides the necessary energy and essential nutrients needed to achieve a student's potential at school. In 2011-2012, Nutrition for Learning will provide student nutrition programs for 12,000 unique children throughout the year in Waterloo Region. Challenging economic times and rising food costs continue to present an obstacle for school nutrition programs already operating on a tight budget. We invite you to directly impact the future of children and youth in Waterloo Region.
