Fern Hollow Nature Center

Fern Hollow Nature Center (FHNC), founded in 1997, provides the community with unique learning opportunities and is the voice for environmental education for the Quaker Valley area. With over 8,000 visitors each year, Fern Hollow has something for everyone to get them outside to explore, learn and discover. Educational programs are held on the grounds, in the area parks and often in the region's vast creek system. We offer family events, adult programs, nature walks, community events, summer camps, and most importantly, unique educational programming for local schools. Fern Hollow also offers a self-guided nature walk, a native tree walk and the first certified Natural Outdoor Classroom in Pennsylvania.

Cardinal Land Conservancy

To preserve natural habitats, waterways, agricultural lands, and open space in Southwest Ohio. We protect and restore natural lands with significant habitats that support native wildlife and create scenic vistas for public enjoyment, as well as agricultural lands suitable for the production of food, timber, or other cultivated or natural products. CLC acquires conservation interests in real properties which it then monitors and stewards in perpetuity. These include conservation easements, fee simple title, and other conservation interests which are acquired through donations and purchases guided by, and executed through, CLC. Once obtained, CLC monitors and otherwise stewards the properties through regular oversight, periodic assessment and, if needed, protective action and legal defense.

WOODLANDS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

WWS is dedicated to preserving and promoting a harmonious coexistance between humans, wildlife and nature. WWS maintains a year-round wildlife rehabilitation facility where all injured and orphaned animals are accepted, rehabilitated and appropriately released back into their natural habitats. Wildlife that is deemed non releaseable may find sanctuary at WWS, and be considered for the WWS Educational Program, that is conducted for local schools, organizations and interest groups. Wildlife rehabilitation is a full-time labour of love that is not funded by the government or any of its agencies. Our on-going endeavours to promote awareness and responsibility for our native wildlife and to rehabilitate the orphaned and injured, are supported solely by public, private and corporate donations. Help us make a difference now and for generations to come.

MEANS Database, Inc.

Too often grocery stores and restaurants find themselves throwing out food, when there is great need in nearby communities. MEANS Database modernizes food recovery in 48 states and the District of Columbia by connecting excess food to organizations and individuals who need it. Hunger lingers in the lives of the people it affects. In infants and toddlers, food insecurity is associated with failure to thrive, a devastating condition with consequences into adulthood (1). In early childhood, hunger is associated with diminished academic progress, more behavioral problems and unhealthy weight (2). By high school, it's linked with dropping out, and by early adulthood, with having children who also face hunger, the cycle starts over again (3). Food insecurity exists in every American demographic and geography, affecting every population tracked by the US Census. However, as it seems for every other social ill, the most rural, the most urban, and minorities in any location bear a disproportionate burden of the weight of hunger. While 12.7% of American families are food insecure, the rate for Black and Latino families are each about 20% (4). Jefferson County, Mississippi, is a study in these disparities: it has the highest percentage of black residents of any American county, and also holds the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of food insecurity in the United States, with nearly 38% of residents facing hunger (5). Meanwhile, while more than 42 million Americans rely on food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency food providers to feed their families, the United States grapples with an massive food waste problem. Forty percent of the American food supply ends up in landfills, with perfectly edible meals being thrown away at all stages of production (7). Food is the single largest contributor to landfill and incinerator mass in the United States, choking the nation's air while 1 in 8 Americans face food insecurity (8). Further complicating this feast and famine dynamic is the uncomfortable truth that even programs meant to address hunger frequently end up wasting food. The issue we are tackling with MEANS is huge: we're trying to prevent food waste and adequately address the problem of hunger. The USDA reports that 48.1 million Americans live in food-insecure households, while Feeding America says that 70 billion pounds of food are wasted in the US each year (8). This task may seem daunting, but we know that through the use of innovative technology like ours, we can help to change the future of food recovery. MEANS (Matching Excess And Need for Stability) is an online communications platform for emergency food providers and their donors. On a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone, agencies create an account with MEANS, registering their contact information, location, the kind(s) of foods they are searching for, and the distance they are willing or able to travel to pick up those goods. Donors post their excess goods on MEANS, and the system emails and/or texts organizations nearby that need those goods. Our tool substantially reduces the communications gap between emergency food providers and their donors, preventing "donation dumping" on both sides. MEANS was designed to handle both traditional food donations, from grocery stores or caterers, and donations between emergency food providers. There is no charge for any of our organization's services, for nonprofit agencies or retailers. Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife

The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife has a simple mission - to create parks and save species. In creating parks, we work with State and Federal governments to identify potential land purchases, and then assist with funds to acquire that land. We don't hold any land - we pass it straight over to the Government to add to the National Park portfolio and it is then managed by the state rangers. In saving species, we work extensively with volunteers, scientists, governments, local communities and other organisations to deliver community-based conservation projects and research nation-wide, including developing corridors for native animals, connecting disparate groups of species to allow them to survive and thrive. Partnership is at the very heart of our philosophy and is central to everything we do.

ERIE WILDLIFE RESCUE

Erie Wildlife Rescue (EWR) is a volunteer-based registered charity, incorporated in 1979. For over 30 years EWR has been providing rehabilitation services to all species of wildlife native to southwestern Ontario. EWR members are dedicated to the treatment and temporary care of injured or orphaned indigenous wildlife, and the subsequent release of healthy animals into appropriate habitats in the wild. We educate the public, promote the value of wildlife and the environment, and encourage positive interactions between people and wildlife. We serve not just the needs of wildlife, but also the needs of the public who ask for our assistance. EWR volunteers answer thousands of inquiries each year. The concerns expressed by these callers may be for the wildlife itself, for personal safety, or for the safety of property. Over 500 birds, mammals and reptiles received treatment from EWR in 2012.

FRIENDS OF THE COVES SUBWATERSHED INC.

The Coves is a series of 3 ponds that offer a natural refuge in the heart of London, Ontario. In 1998, two friends hiking in the Coves lamented that the ecosystem was progressively degrading. The friends wasted little time in talk and soon turned their lamentations into action. By 2000, they enlisted the support of 6 volunteer board members and established an incorporated, non-profit registered charity called the Friends of the Coves Subwatershed Inc. The Friends of the Coves immediately secured funding to create the Coves Subwatershed Plan. With extensive community consultation they identified common goals and secured widespread support for implementation of the plan. The Friends have installed a native plant butterfly garden, have naturalization projects on a former landfill site and shoreline areas, develop educational programs to promote ecologically friendly practices, and established a water quality monitoring program

MAHONE ISLANDS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

Mahone Bay is known throughout the world for its beautiful islands and shorelines. These islands provide: unique habitat to a variety of plants and animals, breathtaking natural landscapes, and traditional access for recreational activities. The islands of Mahone Bay are ecologically significant. These drumlin islands provide unique habitats to support a diversity of species. Yet there is increasing pressure on the ecological integrity of the islands from human activity and development. Such activities can adversely impact and degrade fragile coastal habitats and threaten native wildlife species. MICA has worked since 2003 to bring several of the islands under public ownership. And it has succeeded with the help of many individual donors, the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, and the Long Island Preservation Society. Ten islands are now available for public use in perpetuity.
