While the Y's mission of service and commitment to community health has not changed over the years, our capacity to offer programs and services to meet the growing needs of our community is limited. Lacking the space to offer vital wellness, youth and family programs, the Kelowna Family Y has maximized its potential with its current facilities. Today, we believe that a major expansion to the existing Kelowna Family Y will make a significant impact on the health and development of this generation and those to come.

The YMCA is a worldwide fellowship dedicated to the growth of persons in spirit mind and body and in a sense of responsibility to each other and the human community. YMCA programs are designed to contribute to good health, emotional stability, a positive image and a sense of worth and well-being. It is a holistic approach—one which encourages the balanced development of the total person—that has contributed to the YMCA’s leading role in this delivery of innovative programs and services.

You can help to financially assist children and youth to participate in the Y. Your charitable contribution to the Strong Kids Campaign will help enrich the lives of over 13,500 children and youth who would otherwise not be able to afford to participate in a values-based, recreational YMCA experience. YMCA programs help children and youth build confidence, develop skills and form relationships. Your generous support can open the doors to a Youth Action program, teach a child to swim, build tomorrow’s leaders through the Leader Corps program and provide a safe, nurturing environment with positive role models in Day Camp. The YMCA believes that investing in the development of youth today will help build strong families, which in turn will build strong communities.

Over the years, the Foundation of Stars has become the most important source of non-governmental funding of pediatric research in Quebec. Since its creation in 1977, the Foundation has contributed more than $60,000,000 to pediatric research. The Foundation has chosen to support the dedicated worth of scientists and to fund promising research projects at the following pediatric research centres: the “ CHU Sainte-Justine“, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the “Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec”, and the “Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke”.

Roots of Empathy is a powerful idea whose time has come. Instead of chasing end results – injustice, violence and other societal problems – this award-winning, evidence-based non-profit is supporting children so they can create a better world in the next generation. The program involves classroom visits by an infant and parent. Through guided observation, children describe the baby's development and feelings and reflect on their own feelings and those of others (empathy). They become more socially and emotionally literate, more caring and inclusive and more likely to challenge injustice when they find it. Roots of Empathy has been endorsed by the Dalai Lama, the World Health Organization and the Assembly of First Nations. Today it has reached 270,000 children worldwide. In Canada, it is delivered in English and French in rural, urban, and remote communities. Roots of Empathy’s sibling program, Seeds of Empathy, fosters empathy and early literacy skills in childcare settings.
