The mission of the Sophia Sunshine Foundation is to bring joy and connectivity into the universe through various acts of kindness that empower children experiencing adversity, especially those battling pediatric cancer. Sophia’s love for horses, dogs, dance, music, art, books, golf and tennis brought her a tremendous amount of joy and laughter, even during her most challenging weeks. Through the Sophia Sunshine Foundation, we want to help others experience that joy and heart-mind well-being through activities such as equine therapy, service dog sponsorship and literacy outreach. We also support pediatric cancer research towards a cure for DIPG.

Patients with chronic or life-altering diseases (such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis) must fight both their illness and the financial burden it places on their family as they struggle to pay for their medications. It is estimated that over 35% of these patients have insurance but still cannot afford the co-payments for the specialty therapeutics they need to treat or control their disease, which can range from $300 to over $3000 per month for a single dose. These underinsured patients are not eligible for most free drug or patient assistance programs, leaving them with few alternatives. They may be forced to do without their medications or go into debt to obtain them, greatly affecting their health and quality of life. Our mission is to improve the health and quality of life of underinsured patients with chronic disease, cancer, or other life-altering conditions who cannot afford the medications they so desperately need.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, a type of cell found in the bone marrow. Plasma cells are part of the immune system and make antibodies to help fight infections. Because plasma cells are found in the blood, it is referred to as a hematologic or blood cancer. The word “multiple” is often used because the malignant cells are typically not limited to one area of the body but affect multiple areas of the bone marrow. Multiple myeloma is quite rare, affecting approximately 6,000 Canadians; it is estimated that in 2006, 1,900 new cases of myeloma were diagnosed in Canada, and there were 1,300 myeloma deaths. To date, no cause for this disease has been identified. Although there is currently no cure for myeloma, it is an eminently treatable disease. Many patients go on to lead full lives for years after diagnosis. With increasing research, the overall outlook for patients is steadily improving.

Brad and Vicki Margus founded the A-T Children's Project when two of their young sons were diagnosed with A-T in 1993. Ataxia-telangiectasia is a genetic disease that attacks in early childhood. It progressively affects coordination, predisposes children to lethal cancers, and severely compromises their immune systems. Children with A-T are usually unable to walk by the age of ten and rarely live beyond their teens. By supporting and coordinating aggressive research, we hope to give them a chance to live and to enjoy life's possibilities.
