Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health is an independently incorporated charity whose purpose is to raise funds in support of Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (formerly Whitby Mental Health Centre) and its partners who provide services and support to Ontario Shores' patients and their families. High priorities for funding are innovative care initiatives, education, research, mental illness awareness and mental health promotion programs, and capital needs.
We provide caring, community-based support programs like supportive and independent living, homeless outreach, recreation, suicide bereavement support, and peer support programs for families and individuals. As well, we work closely with other community organizations to bridge gaps in the mental health care system and facilitate access to important services and resources. One in five people experience a mental disorder in their lifetimes and most of us know someone who has faced a mental health challenge or concern. CMHA – Calgary Region strives to improve public understanding of mental health issues at home, in the community, and workplace through community education, advocacy and mental health awareness initiatives. Reaching 23,000 people directly each year, CMHA – Calgary Region is a non-profit, charitable organization. Established in 1955, we are an independent branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Friends for Mental Health, is a bilingual, grass-root self-help community group for families of people with a mental illness. Created 25 years ago by parents of mentally ill persons, our association is the only one in our area offering direct support to these families. Our purpose is to provide practical information, education, supportive counseling, group support, and respite to help families better cope with their situation. We also work to educate the community at large about mental illness and help them to understand how it affects them and their loved ones. We are an integral player in the delivery of mental health services within the community and work collaboratively with other mental health agencies. In addition, we are a pivotal force for getting ill people into treatment, referrals and follow-up services given by other organizations and institutions.
