The Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta was created to provide the benefits of the human-animal bond that is well documented in medical, psychological and social literature. At all stages throughout our lives animal companionship can stimulate sensitivity and learning. In adolescents, involvement in animal assisted activities (AAA) can add a perspective not usually available in many non-pet home or classroom situations. Interaction with companion animals can involve values, morals, modes of behaviour, attitudes and self-examination as well as skills. While the focus is on the human-animal relationship, other aspects including environmental issues, personal health and safety and cooperative learning may also be associated. Members volunteer their personal time along with their pets, providing animal-assisted therapy and animal-assisted activity programs in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health and corrections programs to name a few.

The organization was founded upon the need to develop clear policy and procedures with respect to screening, identifying and intervening in woman abuse cases. This is essential because without policy development, each practitioner responds based on her/his own personal bias and discretion. Only through policy development that guides practice, can professional staff can be held accountable for their intervention. See the Best Practice Guidelines. Over the years, as we have matured, the organization has moved into doing research, completed best practice guidelines, and created a number of powerful community education tools. Through our ongoing work we are continually exploring new issues and continuing to build community capacity by developing resources and tools for front line practitioners.

We’re unique because we’re based in Manitoba – and all of the funds we raise stay in this province, reaching children in all regions of Manitoba. Since 2001, the Council has supported nutrition programs and raised awareness about nutrition issues and the need for food and nutrition policies in schools. We’ve also helped guide decision-makers in developing food and health policies, becoming a recognized voice for issues regarding nutrition programs for school-age children in Manitoba. We are always working on new partnerships, research, and opportunities for programs.
