The FSHD Canada Foundation

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy or FSHD is the most prevalent of the nine primary types of muscular dystrophy affecting adults and children. Muscular dystrophy in general connotes a genetic, hereditary muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. FSHD is also broadly characterized as a neuromuscular disease (NMD), as muscular dystrophy is a subset of NMD. Muscular dystrophies are alike in that they cause progressive skeletal muscle weakness, defects in the biochemical, physical and structural components of muscle, and the death of muscle cells and tissue. However, researchers believe that the causes of each of the muscular dystrophies are not necessarily the same.

THE LEARNING ENRICHMENT FOUNDATION

LEF was founded in 1978 in what was then the City of York. Over the years LEF initiated programs and services that reflected the needs of the local community. As a reception area for recent immigrants this community in the northwest corner of the GTA is one of the most disadvantaged. LEF is now a leader in community economic development and still serves the local community. However, poverty and unemployment are not unique to the former City of York. Therefore LEF attracts and serves people from across the GTA. We design and deliver programs to ensure that individuals who are determined to work get the jobs they need to support their families. With your support LEF will be able to help hundreds of determined individuals who want to contribute and make their way in our city. With your support we can continue to provide a variety of skills training programs, accessible childcare, training for youth at risk, instruction in self-employment and English language classes for new comers.
