Toronto United Church Council works with congregations and social outreach organizations within Toronto Conference, which covers much of south central Ontario. Council's roots date back to 1892 when the Massey family mobilized Toronto's wealthy Methodists to build a more vibrant church. Beginning as the church's banker and real estate advisor and later assuming responsibility for Toronto's social services, Council has a long history of balancing the business of church infrastructure with outreach ministry. Today, Council is in the midst of its most ambitious fundraising effort ever; The Seven Years of Plenty Campaign encompasses the funding of all of Council’s work. Individual donations, the establishment of family funds, bequests, and planned gifts all enable church members to fulfill our faith calling to live in gratitude for God's generosity and to lead in the building of a just society that responds generously to the needs of all.

Over the past several years, there has been a lot of discussion in the United Methodist Church around the enforcement of rules in the Book of Discipline. This has led to many people feeling that the UMC should or will split into new denominations due to the lack of consensus at the general conference level. In light of these developments, the Maples leadership team voted to enter the discernment process in July of 2022. Following this, Maples engaged in a series of educational seminars leading up to a straw poll in November of 2022. 35% of the church's congregation voted to remain within the United Methodist Church, and 65% voted to separate. We will hold a final vote sometime in early 2023 following a few more information seminars detailing the financial details of separation and denominational options that available to the congregation. We are open to the place that the Spirit will guide us.
