Lionheart Owen Foundation

LionHeart Owen Foundation was formed to celebrate and honor the short life of our son, Owen Thomas Vatter. His fight with congenital heart defects and cancer opened our eyes to the pain and trauma caused by these diseases. Our mission is to reach the hearts of individuals, remind them they are not alone and be their voice when they need a little extra roar. With grateful hearts, we are committed to educating the community on the vital needs of specialty pediatric resources for congenital heart defects and cancer, while assisting families affected by these terrible illnesses both financially and emotionally.

Motivation to move! Stimulating and inspiring children and young adults who live with a physical and mental challenge is what moves us. We want children and young people to become the best version of themselves. That is why we motivate them to get moving and chase their dreams. No matter how big the first step is. Being able to overcome, grow and develop is the essence of a good life for us. Day in, day out, we work on solutions and possibilities with future prospects and opportunities. Together we make a difference for others with our initiatives, programs and products. We ensure relevance and inclusion. The mentality of Bibian Mentel, multiple internationally awarded Paralympic top athlete, forms the foundation for our actions. Her physical and mental handling of cancer has empowered us to complete the movement we have started.

Time Heroes Foundation

The TimeHeroes Foundation was founded in 2011 with the goal to build and develop the volunteering culture in Bulgaria. Today the organisation runs the largest volunteering platform in Bulgaria - TimeHeroes.org. By the end of January 2018, TimeHeroes.org has matched 638 organisations which need support for their causes with over 40 000 individuals who wish to donate their time and skills. So far the volunteers have taken part 65 379 times in 1400 volunteering initiatives (called missions) in 175 towns across Bulgaria. The platform is the main, and often sole, source for Bulgarian nonprofit organizations and active citizens to recruit volunteers. To achieve our mission to develop Bulgaria's volunteering culture, we run several further projects. ANNUAL AWARDS We established the annual volunteering awards THE HEROES, which reward outstanding volunteers, organisers, responsible companies and media (after open nominations), and promote and stimulate volunteering as a whole. In 2017 a jury selected 23 of the 226 nominees and these were announced at an official ceremony that was widely covered in media, was attended by 250+ guests and was streamed 26 000 times. YOUTH VOLUNTEERING We are growing a network of school and university volunteer clubs across the country. Over 30 clubs are currently active with 500+ student members organising their own community-based initiatives or supporting existing volunteer missions held by local nonprofits. SENIORS' VOLUNTEER PHONE LINE We operate a National Volunteers' Phone Line volunteering telephone line as an alternative to the website for people without access to the internet or a computer, mainly targeting seniors and retirees. This project aims to tackle the pervasive societal isolation in this age group in Bulgaria. CAPACITY BUILDING Through workshops and systematised good practices we are actively building the capacity of Bulgarian nongovernmental organisations for working with volunteers. In 2015-2016 we collected and systematised the experience of 250 Bulgarian NGOs working with volunteers. We are sharing this know-how in a wiki platform, a 100-page handbook and a series of workshops. Over 1000 NGOs have received the handbook, about 100 have so far participated in our highly-rated workshops. We also fundraise and distribute monthly small grants enabling volunteer involvement in causes.

Favela Street Foundation

The Favela Street Foundation creates a new generation of role models with the power of street football in deprived neighborhoods around the world. This new generation of role models will change their neighborhoods into a more positive and safer place. Although our programs targets 20 to 30 young people per program, we are convinced that the entire community can be reached. We base this on the social network theory. Within six steps (six degrees of separation) the whole world knows each other because acquaintances of yours know others. So within three to four steps our participants quickly reach the entire community with a positive change. We want to bring a culture change and that requires more. It's therefore important that we "touch" people so that they too start to believe in a positive change. Studies of cultural changes - and in particular influencing current stereotypes - show that a critical mass (percentage of people who disagree with the current standard) of 30% is necessary to bring sustainable change. For Favela Street, this means not reaching the entire neighborhood, but showing 30% of the people within our reach that things can be done differently. Favela Street programs target young people facing social exclusion as they grow up in deprived neighborhoods. Because of this social exclusion, they are less likely to receive good education, work or prospect of a positive future. Society says to these young people "you are not participating". In addition, they grow up in neighborhoods where they often have to deal with negative influences such as drugs, gangs, police violence and poverty. These factors can have a huge impact on the self-image, well-being and mindset of young people. By focusing on the development of young people, we ensure sustainable positive change in the neighborhood. Because we believe in the strength, talent and potential of these young people, we have created a program that supports them towards a positive (er) future. We teach them practical skills, how they can organize sports activities as a coach for their neighborhood. They develop their (psycho) social skills, they learn to take responsibility for and direct their future, they are better able to make conscious and sensible choices, they are less negatively influenced. In short, a new generation of role models is emerging. This new generation ensures a lasting positive change in the neighborhood. Because we want to make sure that our program actually makes a positive change in the lives of young people and their neighborhoods, we have developed a special measuring instrument. This was done by research agency XOET, the measuring instrument provides insight at two levels: 1. In the objectives and progression of our participants. 2. In the impact of the individual progression of participants on their communities. We believe that you can only bring sustainable (cultural) change in young people and their communities if you apply a qualitative and personal approach for a longer period. By comparing results at different times, we - and the young people themselves - gain insight into their progress, which provides even more motivation to keep moving forward. In addition, we can determine whether the program really works. Because we want to know whether our program is causing a culture change within the community, gaining insight into our impact is part of the measuring instrument. Based on principles from social network theory, we find out whether we are achieving sufficient "critical mass" to bring a cultural change in the neighborhood. We do this through the young people we train in our programs, but also through the activities organized in the neighborhood.
