Equip Manyatta is a charity organization created to assist a community-based organization in Western Kenya, the Manyatta Youth Resource Center (MYRC). The mission of the MYRC is to increase opportunities for youth living in the slums of Manyatta, Kisumu to participate in sporting activities and the performing arts, to provide health education, support school attendance, and to build the organization into a self sustaining enterprise. Manyatta is the largest slum in Western Kenya and is home to over 60,000 people living in an area of five square miles with little in the way of urban infrastructure. Kisumu is the third largest city in Kenya, with roughly 578,000 people. -Our community-based Board is dedicated to raising sufficient funding for the purpose of developing football programs that will promote healthy growth and development in the youths in our area. -We believe that many youths are not able to participate in the existing programs offered to them either because of a lack of skills or lack of motivation. -We believe that the local area will benefit from the addition of an athletic program such as ours. Many “at-risk” youths don’t participate in school-sponsored programs and end up in trouble. -We have seen that a number of these “at-risk” youths gravitate to programs such as ours and become invested in and committed to positive and constructive objectives (with resulting improvement in school performance and home behavior, less conflict with the legal system). -We seek to educate students not only in the skills necessary to play football but also in important life skills such as responsibility, goal setting, sacrifice, sportsmanship, self-control, judgment, teamwork, leadership, and courage -We seek to assist students in pursuing a college education, using developed football skills as a way of financing these efforts through scholarships. -We seek to develop facilities and provide quality equipment for students of all ages to participate in football programs. Beginning with the development of our playing fields, we intend to create a viable high school / middle school tackle football program along with a viable elementary school flag football program. These programs will also require our taking on the task of training adults to provide coaching and officiating.
