Honing with Crostwight Parochial Church Council is a small Church of England charity in rural Norfolk. Our responsibilities include the care of two listed medieval churches, one of which is All Saints, Crostwight (Grade I). All Saints contains nationally-important 14th century wall paintings depicting a Tree of the Seven Deadly Sins, a Warning to Gossips, a St Christopher and one of the most complete Passion cycles in the country. These rare survivals give an insight into the lives of our medieval forebears. The paintings are in serious danger of being lost because the plaster layer on which they were executed is detaching from the underplaster. This has been made worse by the application in the 1930s of a wax-based coating which trapped moisture and salts within the plaster. The fragility of the paintings has caused the church to be placed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register, and conservation is now urgently needed. To date we have raised over 80% of the approximately £56,000 needed for an accredited conservator to secure the most vulnerable section of paintings (Tree of the Seven Deadly Sins, Warning to Gossips and St Christopher) and to reduce the wax coating. We need help to raise the final £10,000 so that these national treasures can be saved for future generations.
