We have a mission to empower people who live in extreme poverty to create their own livelihoods. We do this by sending toolkits full of refurbished donated tools that are used in skills training centres, offering the trainees a way to put poverty in the past for good and begin their own sustainable careers. In doing so, we also enrich our local UK communities through volunteering opportunities and waste reduction, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability.
The mission of NYPD With Arms Wide Open is to provide a forum where police officers of all ranks and their families, can attend meetings and discuss issues surrounding being the parents/guardians/ caretakers of a child with medical complexities and/or special needs. Often times, families with these children feel isolated and are in need of an organization that addresses their very specific needs and issues. NYPD With Arms Wide Open helps our families care for their children while navigating through the culture, complexities and dangers of being a member of the New York City Police Department. NYPD With Arms Wide Open have been able to assist many of their members with specialized medical equipment such as pediatric therapy and durable medical equipment, specialized bicycles with hand pedals, motorized wheel chairs and in-home track lifts. We have also assisted families defray the cost of therapy sessions that insurances refuse to cover, as well as provide financial support to families with children that have extended stays in hospitals and catastrophic medical expenses. NYPD With Arms Wide Open is available to any cop, active or retired, regardless of rank. As there are never any dues, donations and frequent fundraising are the organization’s only source of funding. To- date, over $800k in assistance has been passed along to families who have expressed a need to our organization. NYPD With Arms Wide Open has established an annual academic scholarship award for students within the NYPD community living with special needs, those who are the family members of an individual with special needs and those who have dedicated their community service efforts to the special needs community. In the last four years since The Detective Steven McDonald Memorial Scholarship was established, we have delivered over $90k in scholarship awards in Steven’s memory.
