Joan lectored at our St. Lucy Mass on December 13th, 2022 using our braille Mass Propers. We celebrate this Mass every year with our clients and supporters, in celebration of the patron saint of the blind's feast day. It is the highlight of the year for our organization. The Mass is also live streamed on our website and Facebook page, so our patrons and supporters all over the globe can be right there with us.
Neva discovered Xavier Society when her Pastor gave her a large print version of the Missalette. Unfortunately, the font was much too small for her to read by that time. A few years later, she worked with Hadley Institute to learn braille and eventually requested the Mass Propers in braille, which she used for many years. Recently, Neva bought a refreshable braille display, so now she downloads the Sunday readings to her iPhone. Neva also downloads audio books from Xavier Society to read on her Digital Talking Book Player. She especially enjoys listening to books about Mary and the Saints.
Jude is one of our young clients in Kansas who is receiving our braille materials to learn about and develop his faith. He has received many braille CCD textbooks which has helped him make the Sacraments with the rest of his class!
Rev. Santos is a blind priest in the Philippines who receives our braille materials. He is able to minister to his parishioners and carry out his priestly duties thanks to the help of our supporters.
Clara is a really special client who receives our braille materials. In 1900, Margaret Coffey, a blind woman who taught blind children, wanted to provide materials to blind children so that they could learn about their faith just as their sighted friends did. Clara epitomizes the roots of our mission. Here is a little more from her parents: "Clara is six years old and blind from birth due to a condition called Peters anomaly. Since 2016 she has attended religion class at her parish in Texas and receives all the materials of the curriculum transcribed in braille by Xavier Society for the Blind. She also gets the sticker rewards that she really likes. Clara loves listening to music and dancing along to it. Thank you to Xavier Society for the Blind for making religious education possible for Clara so that she can attend classes with her sighted friends. We are looking forward to her being able to make her first communion next year with the rest of her class."
