Our Mission

K9s For Warriors is ending veteran suicide and returning our Warriors to a life of dignity and independence. We rescue and train shelter dogs to be paired as Service Dogs for Warriors with service-connected Post-Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Military Sexual Trauma. We are the nation's largest provider of Service Dogs for disabled American veterans.

K9s For Warriors began in 2011, after founder Shari Duval's son, Brett, returned from 2 tours as a contracted bomb dog handler in Iraq with severe PTSD. The organization began modestly, serving one Warrior and Service Dog team each month out of a small, residential home. In the decade following, K9s has grown into two fully donated campuses capable of serving up to 12 Warriors monthly.

Our organization's purpose is simple: we rescue dogs from across the country, give them a new "leash" on life as Service Dogs, and pair them with deserving Warriors with the sole mission to prevent the approximately 20 veteran suicides that occur daily.

Shari Duval passed away in February 2021, but her legacy will live on through the over 800 Warriors her program has helped save.
