Adrian, age twenty, has cerebral palsy and other conditions that require full physical care. Bathing was unsafe and exhausting for his single mother, Cynthia, due to his size, seizures, and the lack of accessible features. These challenges made daily care difficult and stressful for both. Cynthia would carry Adrian in her arms and step with one foot over the bathtub to place him in the shower chair. Adrian’s dream was a “new shower so Mommy doesn’t have to step over the side.” Sunshine on a Ranney Day provided Adrian with a safe, accessible shower, allowing his mother to assist him without risk of injury. The wheelchair-accessible sink promotes Adrian’s independence and dignity. Our designer, Clareece, leaned into Adrian and Cynthia’s Puerto Rican heritage to provide them with a colorful, yet serene space. We also provided Adrian and Cynthia with a custom-built changing table and widened the bathroom doorway, significantly reducing the need for Cynthia to carry Adrian. What was once stressful and physically taxing is now comfortable, safe, and far more manageable for both of them.
