The Harvest Fund's vision is to be an enterprise that builds the agricultural economy while ending poverty. Our mission is to improve the livelihoods of Zambian female farming cooperatives. In Zambia and similar countries, women are the backbone of agriculture yet toil away with their bare hands and feet and basic tools. The Harvest Fund creates a profitable half-hectare vegetable plot for each of its 10+ cooperatives that is watered year-round with a solar-powered irrigation system. We provide seed, fertilizer, and regenerative agriculture training to make these women farmers more productive and permanently escape poverty.
Prisca was born in 1966 in Chipata, Zambia. Despite financial struggles, her parents prioritized education, allowing her to excel in school until her father's unexpected passing. At just fifteen, Prisca became pregnant, married, and dropped out of school. With her husband as a fisherman, she embraced motherhood, eventually having five children. Tragedy struck again when her husband died, leaving her to care for her children alone. Struggling to provide for them, Prisca moved to the Kafue District, hoping for a fresh start with her sister’s farming support. However, small-scale farming proved challenging without resources, and she could not afford to send her children to school. Driven by her faith, Prisca prayed for assistance and was selected for The Harvest Fund’s pilot program in 2019. Through this initiative, she gained access to agricultural training and microfinance for climate-smart technologies. Embracing these opportunities, Prisca improved her farming practices and was able to send all her children back to school. Today, not only has Prisca achieved educational goals for her children, but she has also experienced improved physical and mental well-being. Her infectious spirit inspires her community, encouraging everyone in The Harvest Fund's program to eliminate hunger in their households.
In the heart of Zambia, Esther Muskotwa, a resilient subsistence farmer and mother of six, has triumphed over adversity to improve her family’s future. Born in 1968, Esther faced challenges early on after her father’s death. Raised without formal schooling, she became the sole provider for her family, relying on maize as their staple crop. For years, Esther’s harvest yielded 80% less maize than others, leaving her family struggling to survive on just $0.90 a day. To make ends meet, she and her husband sold charcoal, which was both labor-intensive and environmentally damaging. With support from The Harvest Fund, Esther’s maize production has dramatically increased, allowing her to better feed her family, sell surplus maize, and afford her children’s education. No longer needing to sell charcoal, her family now enjoys at least two nutritious meals a day. Esther expresses deep gratitude to The Harvest Fund for transforming her life. Her journey exemplifies resilience and determination, inspiring others to believe in the possibility of change.
