The mission of CASA, First Judicial District is to support and promote volunteer advocacy so that children and youth from Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, and Los Alamos Counties who are trauma-impacted or system-involved can be safe, have permanent connections, and the opportunity to thrive.
A 19-year-old monolingual Spanish speaker with a 2 month old baby was getting out of a domestic violence situation and was matched with a Spanish-speaking Abrigo Advocate. Her Abrigo Advocate worked in partnership with 5 other non-profits and were able to get this new mom housing, and furniture, a crib, food and infant clothing. This mom, who was initially distrustful of services, is now connected, knows she is not alone, and is being supported on an ongoing basis by her Abrigo Advocate and other partners.
In one of our recent CASA cases, a new foster family was in need of household items and food. CYFD wasn’t able to get them their stipend until after the holidays which was months away. Our volunteers stepped up to immediately deliver boxes of food and supplies to the family and their 4 children.
A caregiver was overwhelmed caring for his two young, high-needs great-grandchildren and considering relinquishing custody and having them enter foster care. One of our partners connected him to Abrigo Advocates and McCurdy Family Services and in unison we increased supports so he can continue to care for his children. His Abrigo Advocate will support him consistently to decrease future crisis.
