Our Mission

The SGB Youth Literacy Council works to meet the needs of children in the Southern Grey-Bruce area by offering confidential one-on-one tutoring to students with learning difficulties. The tutoring service is available for school-aged children from six to eighteen years who are having difficulty with reading, writing and math. Learners are referred to the SGBYLC by teachers and parents who have noticed the child’s learning difficulties but have found it difficult to help. To serve their needs, we rely upon volunteer tutors from the community. Representatives of the SGBYLC work closely with parents and teachers to match students with volunteer tutors, to offer ongoing training and support sessions to tutors, and to enhance public awareness of the importance of family literacy. The work of our tutors often succeeds in bringing learners up to grade level, giving lasting academic results while boosting the children’s confidence and self-esteem.
