Los Altos History Museum gathers and presents stories and artifacts that bridge the past and the present to challenge establish narratives by fostering the creative energy of staff and volunteers, producing engaging education exhibits and programs. Founded in 1977 as a grassroots community volunteer organization, we have grown over the last 45 years to be a mission-driven organization working to help residents of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and Cupertino make sense of our changing world and our own place in it. Our vision is to be the premier local center for creating a sense of belonging for everyone living and working in the area across multiple generations and multiple ethnicities. Our core values are authenticity, diversity, and innovation.

The mission of the African American Civil War Museum is to correct a great wrong in history that largely ignored the enormous contributions of the 209,145 members of the United States Colored Troops. It tells the stories and preserves for posterity the historic roles these brave men of African, European, and Hispanic descent played in ending slavery and keeping America united under one flag. The Museum uses a rich collection of artifacts, documents, primary sources and technology to create a meaningful learning experience for families, students, Civil War enthusiasts and historians about the period from the American Civil War to Civil Rights and beyond.
