Almas Jiwani Foundation

Gender equality is not only a basic human right, but its achievement has enormous socio-economic ramifications. Empowering women fuels thriving economies, spurring productivity and growth. Yet gender inequalities remain deeply entrenched in every society. Women lack access to decent work and face occupational segregation and gender wage gaps. They are too often denied access to basic education and health care. Women in all parts of the world suffer violence and discrimination. They are under-represented in political and economic decision-making processes. UN Women was created to address such challenges. It is a dynamic and strong champion for women and girls, providing them with a powerful voice at the global, regional and local levels.. We work to improve the lives of women in Canada and around the world. Your generosity today will provide a better tomorrow for girls and women worldwide.

Children's Care International

In 2003, CCI opened the Rainbow Centre in Andhra Pradesh in India which, up until 2009, took in about one hundred child labourers. Caught up in the endless cycle of slavery, these children used to labour in conditions that threatened their safety and development. Together with their families, they now enjoy health care, and access to education and career training as well as to microcredit programmes. In 2010, CCI enrolled them in the best schools in their area, where they are getting very good grades; these children are closer now than ever to their dream of holding a decent job.Since 2009, CCI finances the administration costs of the Santikham Centre outside Bangkok, Thailand, which is managed by the Foundation for Child Development, a Thai non-governmental organisation. FCD strives to better the lives of child labourers and their families, who have illegally crossed into Thailand and are thus particularly vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation.

Urban Stable

The solid foundation that exists today within The Horse Connection Inc. began 15 years ago as a university project in Applied Counselling. Our Equine Alternative Learning Program developed out of the recognition of the importance and need to keep “at risk” youth engaged and in school. Using horses and the teaching of horsemanship as an instrumental tool to facilitate and to foster growth of unlimited life skills was how we envisioned responding to this need. The Horse Connection Inc. was founded and became a registered non-profit charitable organization in 2001, after which a 2-year pilot project was launched in 2002 with the Pembina Trails School Division. There is a strong consensus amongst the school division, schools, and the various governments social, health, youth and community services that have been involved in our program that there is a continuous need for the expansion of this unique type of school programming.

CORE INTERNATIONAL

CORE International focuses on developing partnerships and programs to address the self-identified needs of excluded people. We also work to build ‘bridges’ between groups of people, organizations, and individuals who are able to provide services and support. CORE has identified seven priorities for our development focus including: • Gender and Social Inclusion • Literacy, Education, and Participatory Learning and Action • Sustainable use of resources to improve the livelihoods of the poor • Primary Health Care • Micro-enterprise projects • Appropriate alternative technology and innovations • Indigenous Knowledge. Although many of these priorities are linked, in our first year of operation we are focusing on literacy projects, which include addressing the issue of gender and social inclusion. We have prioritized working in Nepal or India for the immediate future, though we intend to expand to other countries as our organization gains experience and resources.

Roots of Empathy

Roots of Empathy is a powerful idea whose time has come. Instead of chasing end results – injustice, violence and other societal problems – this award-winning, evidence-based non-profit is supporting children so they can create a better world in the next generation. The program involves classroom visits by an infant and parent. Through guided observation, children describe the baby's development and feelings and reflect on their own feelings and those of others (empathy). They become more socially and emotionally literate, more caring and inclusive and more likely to challenge injustice when they find it. Roots of Empathy has been endorsed by the Dalai Lama, the World Health Organization and the Assembly of First Nations. Today it has reached 270,000 children worldwide. In Canada, it is delivered in English and French in rural, urban, and remote communities. Roots of Empathy’s sibling program, Seeds of Empathy, fosters empathy and early literacy skills in childcare settings.
