MAHONE ISLANDS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

Mahone Bay is known throughout the world for its beautiful islands and shorelines. These islands provide: unique habitat to a variety of plants and animals, breathtaking natural landscapes, and traditional access for recreational activities. The islands of Mahone Bay are ecologically significant. These drumlin islands provide unique habitats to support a diversity of species. Yet there is increasing pressure on the ecological integrity of the islands from human activity and development. Such activities can adversely impact and degrade fragile coastal habitats and threaten native wildlife species. MICA has worked since 2003 to bring several of the islands under public ownership. And it has succeeded with the help of many individual donors, the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, and the Long Island Preservation Society. Ten islands are now available for public use in perpetuity.

HAMILTON CHALLENGER BASEBALL ASSOCIATION

Playing team sports, is a healthy part of growing up. Children and youth dream of scoring the winning goal, hitting a homerun, or crossing the goal line for a touchdown. Competition, challenge and team experiences are beneficial for everyone. Challenger Baseball is a program for players with special needs. Participation in the HCBA provides the opportunity to develop and improve endurance, coordination and skills, such as sportsmanship and fair-play, at recreational or competitive levels of involvement. Individuals develop a sense of belonging, lasting friendships are built and strengthened and the level of fun and enjoyment of life is enhanced. Buddies may assist players during games, however, the priority of the buddies is to encourage the player to participate to the maximum of their ability. Rules are adapted as required to match players’ abilities so that participation and teamwork are emphasized.

Northern Brain Injury Association

NBIA is a charity organization based on the following principles: 1. The NBIA provides the mechanism to ensure education and information is available broadly across the north thereby reducing service duplication while filling the gaps in service. 2. Survivors of brain injury and their families who receive education and support are better able to rebuild their lives following acquired brain injury. 3. Living in a remote or rural part of the province does not reduce the need of survivors and families for personal supports. 4. Supports for northerners must be tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual, the family and the community. 5. Supports for northerners must always take weather, distance, availability of technology and road conditions into consideration. 6. Northerners and northern communities gain strength by balancing independence and cooperation with other northern communities.

Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester

The Humane Society Of Rochester And Monroe County for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Inc. was founded in 1873. Since the 1950's the Society has been known as Lollypop Farm, its name coming from the then popular Shirley Temple song - On the Good Ship Lollipop. Our mission is to build lifelong bonds between people and animals through education, community outreach programs, and the prevention of cruelty.  We envision a time when our community celebrates the human-animal bond; embraces the mutual benefits therein; and treats all fellow beings with care, compassion and respect.
