At Big Brothers Big Sisters we believe that.... Every Child in Canada Who Needs a Mentor, Has a Mentor.
Within every child, there is the potential to achieve success in their adult lives. But for some children, the path to success can be difficult. A caring adult who provides positive role modelling can make all the difference. Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax-Pickering provides children with mentors through a variety of programs including Big Brother and Big Sister one-to-one match, In-School Mentoring for both boys and girls, and/or Couples for Kids. Research studies have shown that children in our programs do better in school, have better peer relationships and are more likely to go on to post secondary education. It takes just one ... one person who cares about a child. Please make a donation to make a difference in the life of a child. Invest in a child today and you will be building a better tomorrow.
COMMUNITY MATCHING One volunteer matched with one child, meet a couple of hours each week for a minimum commitment of a year. Big Brothers and Sisters are at least 18 years of age. All that is expected is that they spend time on a consistent basis with a child mainly from a single parent home and develop a healthy relationship. COUPLES MATCH A Big Couple is two people who are given the unique opportunity of building a two-to-one friendship as opposed to our regular one-to-one friendships. Meet a couple of hours each week for a minimum commitment of a year. IN-SCHOOL MENTORING An adult or high school student 16 years of age or older is matched with an elementary student. One hour a week, at school, for the school year, during school hours. GO GIRLS! Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a mentoring program designed to encourage physical activity participation, healthy eating choices, and the development of a positive self-image, among girls ages 12 to 14.
We believe that every child should have the opportunity to reach their potential. Serving as role models our mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, staying in school, respect, confidence to learn new skills, and grow into healthy, positive contributing adults. We believe that by opening a child's eyes to what is, opens their minds to what could be. Each time we introduce a child to a caring mentor we start something special - a life changing relationships built on friendship, trust and empowerment. Guided by a team of qualified caring staff we have been impacting lives in Red Deer and area since 1976.
We provide screened and trained, volunteer adult mentors to young people in need of additional friendship, throughout the Okanagan. Our programs include traditional matches between volunteer "Bigs" and their "Littles" , aged 7 -16, from single parent families. We also offer an In-School Mentoring Program, which requires less time from the volunteer and involves a weekly get-together with a youngster on school premises.
Big Sisters began matching girls with a Big Sister in Edmonton in 1972. Big Brothers started in Edmonton in 1980. The two organizations merged in 1990, and have grown from serving under 100 children in 1990, to serving 2700 children in 2008. Our goal is to serve 5000 children by 2013. Our two "traditional" matching programs have grown to ten programs today, meeting the diverse needs of children in the communities we serve.

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver is a registered charity and community-based organization that has been operating in the Lower Mainland since 1957. We offer friendship-based mentoring programs for at-risk boys and girls. Traditionally, we have matched boys who have limited to no contact with their fathers with carefully screened and trained adult male volunteers. Times have changed, as have our volunteers and the needs of our community. In response, we have developed a menu of programs to suit the diversity of our communities and the busy schedules of our volunteers. We have also expanded our service area to include communities from across the Lower Mainland, Sea-to-Sky Corridor and the Sunshine Coast. We currently serve the following areas: Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Delta, New Westminster, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Surrey, White Rock, Tsawwassen, Squamish, Whistler and the Sunshine Coast.
