HANDS ACROSS THE NATIONS

HATN works with communities in Mali, West Africa, and in Bolivia, South America. Among our recent activities are: - construction of two community health centers/hospitals and related support (financial, equipment, medical know-how); - implementing free medical/dental clinics and check-ups; - construction of a maternity centre and related support; - support of 3 schools with two more school construction projects in progress; - implementation of numerous water filtration systems, public latrines and educational programs on hygiene/sanitation practices; and, - education programs on irrigation and livestock management. A volunteer-based organization having no employees, HATN has been able to achieve low administration costs without sacrificing organizational effectiveness. OKALA FOUNDATION

The main focus of Okala’s work is the health and education of the village children, and the urgent medical needs of the villagers. Through continued sponsorship with Okala Foundation, the children receive a hot lunch every school day, all necessary school supplies needed for the year, plus a mosquito net to help reduce the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

Burnaby Hospital is a 300 bed, community based, acute care hospital caring for over 230,000 people every year. Our Emergency department is one of the busiest in the Province of BC and treats over 45,000 adults and 12,000 children annually.

Wordfest

Wordfest is a non-profit arts organization that brings readers and writers together to experience the power of story through a premier international writer’s festival and year-round literary events. Wordfest’s main event is a six-day literary festival that features upwards of 70 writers from the local, national and international stage. The Festival has approximately 65 separate events and attracts an audience of over 15,000. In addition to the annual Festival, Wordfest hosts literary events throughout the year. Events include poetry and spoken word performances, current event panels, publishing industry workshops, art installations, youth and multilingual programming, in-school performances and featured events with the biggest and brightest stars of the book scene. Wordfest is considered one of North America’s premier literary festivals, attracting over 15,000 audience members in 2013. Wordfest is further dedicated to a youth education program, Book Rapport.

Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) is a leading international non-profit that is bringing ICT and workforce skills to marginalized communities in Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. The unique DOT youth-led model captures the enthusiasm and digital talents of young university and college graduates who are trained to deliver DOT programming in their communities. DOT serves as a bridge in the school-to-work transition, providing youth with the market-driven skills, self-confidence and motivation they need to find jobs and start businesses. DOT invests in young role models, DOT “Interns”, each of whom inspires and mobilizes hundreds more, diffusing sustainable change throughout communities. Placing youth at the center of community development has proven to be cost-effective with high-impact. For over ten years, DOT has been transforming communities by investing in more than 4,000 young role models who have reached over 800,000 of their peers and neighbours.

SALT SPRING FILM FESTIVAL SOCIETY

There is something for everyone at our annual three-day festival: movies that explore music, art and culture, engage humanitarian and social justice concerns and deal with environmental and international issues. Community support remains the heart of the festival: volunteers, patrons and community sponsors make the festival possible. We are a unique film festival: admission is, and always has been, by donation. This ensures that everyone is welcome and no one is turned away.

Support Casa Guatemala Children works to empower Casa Guatemala in the mutual vision to equip the children in their care with the skills and education needed to become upstanding, empowered citizens in their community and to become fully self-sustained through the businesses that they run which provide financial support and meaningful job training for the older children. Throughout the 20 year partnership, SCGC has played an integral role in promoting the health and well-being of underprivileged children in Guatemala by providing financial assistance to Casa Guatemala. SCGC work with Casa Guatemala to: Provide nutritional and medical assistance to children; Provide informal adult vocational training in agriculture, carpentry and other skill areas for the adults of the community in which these children live, and; Relieve the distress of orphaned and abandoned children through provision of accommodation, food, medical supplies, education and training, and other similar activities.
