Cumberland Community Forest Society

The Cumberland Community Forest Society is dedicated to protecting threatened forest lands surrounding the historic Village of Cumberland on Vancouver Island. This lush closed canopy forest is a rich ecosystem filled with unique plants and animals, multi purpose trails, heritage landmarks and more. The Cumberland Forest is a much beloved forest and an integral part of our community used by families, hikers, mountain bikers, bird watchers, runners, photographers and more. The Cumberland Forest is also part of an important habitat corridor that runs from Comox Lake right to Baynes Sound. The community of Cumberland has been working to purchase these privately held forest lands since 2000 to save them from destruction. We do this through an incredible variety of community fundraising events, a robust monthly donor program, grants and foundations, one time donors and crowd funding campaign like this one!

Tostan Canada

Imagine an African village where a 14-year old girl stands proudly to advocate for human rights. Where she is safe from violence. Where she can go to school and become a woman before becoming a wife. Where she and her parents join a community-wide movement for health, democracy, and peace. Where together they are transforming the social and family networks that will shape her future. Good. Now imagine a few thousand more. Momentum is building across West Africa for a brighter future for girls and their communities. Tens of thousands of girls are now able to dream of a life free from violence and strive towards a future filled with knowledge, choice, and opportunity. Thousands of communities are making human dignity a reality. The next few years present a rare opportunity to transform the lives of 1.6 million people. BILL 7 AWARD LGBTQ SCHOLARSHIP

The Bill 7 Award Trust provides scholarships for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, 2-spirited and queer youth who are in financial need and are enrolled in their first program at any post-secondary institution in Ontario. It is named after the 1986 Ontario legislation that extended the protection of the Human Rights Code to lesbians and gay men. Bill 7 Award is directed and administered by a Board of Trustees made up of representatives from two community groups: Community One and Supporting Our Youth (a program of Sherbourne Health Centre). By building a capital trust fund, Bill 7 Award is able to leverage contributions that are made to provide scholarships for many years to come. In recent years, Bill 7 Award has been able to grant 4 awards of $2,000 each to very deserving LGBTT2SQ students. Donations may be designated to be invested in the capital fund, disbursed in the following year, or this decision can be left to the discretion of the trustees.

Self-Help International

Self-Help International (SHI) devotes its efforts to alleviating world hunger and poverty by providing opportunities to rural citizens that ultimately lead to self-reliance. Since its inception, Self-Help has served as a vessel; training, education, and opportunities are provided to rural citizens and whole communities in developing countries so that they can have better lives. MISSION STATEMENT: To alleviate hunger by helping people help themselves. SELF-HELP'S INITIATIVE Educate: We educate the people of the United States to understand the problems of life in developing countries particularly the awareness of the perpetual struggle by millions to produce and distribute food to battle persistent chronic hunger and poverty; we help tell their story Train: We train people in developing countries in the use of Quality Protein Maize (QPM). This increases crop yields and improves nutrition. We assist local farm families with planting, Improve: We improve infant and pre-school children's diets by administering an improved porridge feeding program. Made from QPM and pinches of barley malt, this combination has been proven to alleviate malnutrition, thwart sickness, and keep children in school so they can continue their education. Empower: We provide micro-credit loans for women to start small scale businesses. This availability of credit empowers women and increases their income - because they do not have access to traditional financing.
